wife shut of the expedition yesterday , and the lights were on
it wasn't even for very long and
I took a 2 mile walk to the nearest auto parts quickly before they closed, bought a battery jump pack , turns out they stocked a good one I guess they know what tow drivers and shops like to use and they stock them, wasn't cheap but good tools are not
2 mile walk back with the jump pack , starts right up
the battery is 2 years and 10 months old from time of install full replacement warranty for 3 years
today to test it I turned on the headlights 5 minutes then tried to start it , no go
took the battery back to Walmart and got my replacement today , remember to save your receipt make photo copies of it because the receipt paper will go blank in 3 years in a glove box.
I had been thinking about getting a jump pack any way
while I had the battery out of the expedition I figured lets test and see how good is the jump pack claims 1500 peak amps , I had been watching some review videos last week , what seems to separate the jump packs is can it start the vehicle with no battery and be the battery
the answer on this one is yes get the clamps on the terminals well and it started a 5.4 at 30 degrees F with no other battery at all
this is a Booster Pac ES5000
yesterday my options were pay the tow truck 80 dollars for a jump and wait an hour or walk and spend my 80 towards a tool I had been looking at any way.
4 miles isn't that far
if your battery is getting close to the end of it's warranty , go turn on you headlights in the drive way parked where you can get a set of cables or a charger to it , set a 15 minute timer if you can't start it when you shut off the lights give it 30 seconds , then turn the key , it's new battery time
the Walmart brand Everstart Maxx start was what I found several years ago to replace the Farm and Fleet Gold batteries I had been buying since 1994
I was checking battery reviews and the Maxx start is still very near the top of performance and near bottom of price.
also my son worked at Walmart for a short time , as he puts it the managers have basically the ability to override anything so be polite ask nicely and if you don't have your receipt they can give you some lee way on that.
I despite knowing I made 2 copies of the receipt last time and stuck one in the map pocket and the other in the glove box could not find either one.
they saw the manufacture date on the battery was 12/2018 and since we are only 12 days into December exchanged my battery no cost I know I didn't own the Expedition till 12/28/2018 when I bought it from my grandpa , my dad had sold it to him in 2013 , dad bough it new in 2000 I think it was mid January of 2019 or early Febuary when I installed the battery , I know it was -17 becuase I jumped it got it running drove to the store didn't turn it off till I knew they had a battery for me and then changed it quickly right out side their door
I made 5 copies this time gave one to the wife to put in her receipts file , one for the glove box , one for the console , one in a quart ziplock bag under the battery , one for my important records folder and took a picture with my phone.
and Anti seize works , the 8mm bolt that holds the battery in , was coated it in anti seize years ago, still silver and came out with a nut driver no problem

Walmart had a great warranty. You could bring your battery back right before it expired and say it wasn't performing good and get it replaced for free. Not sure if they clamped down on yet. yes now it has to fail their tester and they tell you it could take an hour and a half to know they also no longer have the 3 year replacement 5 year pro-rated , it is just 3 year replacement they apparently know 3 years is about the limit I knew this battery would have to fail any fair test , I left it with them and they called me back in a lot less than 90 minutes to say yes they would replace the battery. if it won't pass the headlight test it shouldn't pass their tester. whats sort of interesting is that almost all the batteries Napa , O'rily , auto zone , Walmart , farm and fleet you name it are made by 3-4 companies , Johnson controls makes most of the budget batteries

One of these is less than 200 bucks. Couple hundred foot extension cords. Will start a semi on a below 0 day. Charge your marine battery in no time. Trickle charge your lawn mower. Pretty handy tool. Here is my charger with a few mods. Remove the dinky little plastic wheels that it comes with and bolt it to a cheap Harbor Freight handtruck. Much easier to move around especially on uneven ground/grass surfaces. Bolt an old electrical box to the top and keep all your battery related tools in it. Everything in one place.

For testing your battery use a load tester. Pretty cheap tool and they last forever. Whenever Im changing oil and checking fluids I also get out the load tester, especially when the weather starts freezing

funny you should mention a charger , in my van I used to carry a 2/10/20/40/100 amp charger and 200 feet of extension cord , that van went through batteries every other year till I bought the Maxx start Ever start batteries then I almost didn't need it.
I have charger and cables in my truck , the set for the wife's got taken out at some point they are going back in. it had made it almost 3 years without a problem

It seems like every time I turn around I'm replacing batteries in something. Vexilar battery on Wed (1 year old) snowmobile battery today (2 years old). Looked around my shop and must have 1/2 doz shot batteries of some kind or another, tools etc. to be recycled. Can't wait till all our vehicles rely on battery power! I sorta collect batteries. Working on cars a lot for myself and others , plus friends give them to me. Worth a few bucks at the scrap yard for the lead. My record haul was a pile that was sitting outside and took almost 5+ years to acquire. Watching scrap prices and when it was at a peak , loaded up about 35 or so batteries , took them in. They pay better when you have a bigger pile. I got almost $400 for them.

That booster pack es5000 is a nice piece. That's what we use for a jump pack at my work. The charging cord has to get replaced every once in a while, but that's only because someone will grab it without unplugging it and break the cord. well that makes sense I see the charging cords for sale on amazon separate and wondered why they seem to have so many of them for sale if the unit comes with one

Bolt an old electrical box to the top and keep all your battery related tools in it. Everything in one place. lot of familiar tools in that box , changed a lot of batteries when I worked for Penske 25 years ago , not so many since. still have my battery tool kit most every where here gets 10 dollars more for battery without a core exchange don't see a lot of batteries around when My brother worked at napa the employees could buy the good exchange batteries for 10 dollars. some people just replace them every 2 years and if they found one that tested good they would keep it out for the 20 dollar demo car batteries and other folks they knew always looking for a battery

I put the receipt in a zip lock bag and duct tape it to the battery. Works for me. this time I put it in the bag and put it under the battery we will se how that works
