In my travels today I picked up this heavy duty galvanized barrel. Stamped into it is:
Midway Meat Co.
Established 2081
Lafayette Ohio
I assume the date should be 1820 or 1802
I was wondering if anybody knew of this company, I can find nothing online.
Hal is old and from Ohio, maybe he knows!!

I live 3 miles west of Midway and was born and raised in the area. Lafayette is around 12 miles north and I don’t know much about it. Both are small villages that have seen better days. Midway is also known as Sedalia and was a major livestock area a long time ago. Story goes Midway is so named as it is halfway between New York and Chicago. Don’t know if that’s true but it ain’t far off. My Grandpa would tell stories of driving livestock to shipping pens. In those days everyone had fence up and the drives went right down the road. His job as a boy was to ride his pony ahead and close all gates and open them after the drive had past. At one time they were both prosperous little towns but like all the others they got left behind with modern highways and interstates. Sorry I can’t give you any more info right now. Most of the old timers are gone who might know.

Also if that company was established in 1820 it had to be in business a long time to get to the era of metal barrels.

I drive through Midway, on State Route 38 frequently. There's not much there.

38 North of Midway is rough in bad weather. I had a bunch of sheet metal come flying across the road, above and in front of me once. Another time I drove through a blizzard where people just gave up and parked on 38. Coming over the tiny bump like hills, there were spots I could not see the hood of my truck for 20 some seconds at a time. Twice I've seen ball lightning on 38. Once the whole sky turned blue, after dark and stayed lit up bright for about 5 seconds. One time a friend and I came through after a snowfall and pulled 3 vehicles back onto the road and gave 2 guys, whose vehicle was stuck to badly, a ride home. Last Summer my thermometer in my car went from 93F to 51F in seconds, when I drove into a thunderstorm.

Hey Keith, I came up on the farm right across from the school on 38 3 miles north of Midway. My folks still live there. Yes it’s a windy piece.

I know where that is. It's nice farmland in that area. It's board flat.

I live just outside of Mechanicsburg, on the bottom edge of the Bellefontaine Ridge. The ridge protects our farm from most of the bad weather coming in from the West and channels it down your way. On the Columbus news, during bad storms, that come in from the West, there is small diamond of good weather on the doppler radar and in really bad storms a smaller triangle of good weather. We live under that diamond or triangle. Often we can see clear sky above us and see hard ran in every direction.

If you were shipping cattle from Ohio to Illinois, by railroad, from Midway, Ohio over would be a nice flat grade for the tracks.

Yes that company was near Lafayette from the info I received.
It was located on state route 309 just east of napoleon rd. There is a dollar general close to the location now.
I am working on garnering more info.

The text said winsor but I don't know for sure.
My cousin said he remembers seeing the barrels.
Pretty cool to have one.

The location would be midway between Lafayette and harrod if looking at a map.

Thanks for the info Ack. Found the barrel in an old barn near our farm. Was buried in a pile of debris and newspapers with dates from 1958. Very heavy barrel probably 1 1/2 times the weight of a normal metal barrel.
