Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not discounting any of the other reasons people have mentioned, but one that hasn’t been mentioned is weather. All other things being equal, I see more foot damage in the sloppy muddy weather than I do when it’s dry. That leads me to believe the foot is sliding more in the trap and causing the damage. If they were on a drag, they probably would have picked a drier place to lay up lol.

Makes perfect sense. Put yourself in a coyotes shoes. Its cold. You are wet and muddy. And you are completely exposed. I doubt you would spend much time taking a nap.
