I had an appointment with a customer last Friday. He rolled up in a new Tesla. I had to ask him how it did in the cold temps we were having. It was -12 when he arrived. He said the car was fully charged @ 388 KWH when he left home. When he arrived at the other property, he had 18 KWH left in the battery. This was a loaner, his Tesla had been towed in to the dealer the day before for mechanical problems. Anyway, he said he could fully charge in 2 hours with a 220V adapter plug and more than 8 hours were required for a standard 110V outlet. He also said, in decent weather, he could get 1 mile/3 KWHs. He did the math on his trip Friday and it required 5+ KWHs/mile. His car was, pretty much, dead after 65 miles. Kind of funny because he left his charging cord at home and his wife had to drive her electric car up, then the were going to have to wait 4 hours to get both cars changed for the return trip home.

I guess it is human nature to resist change, but I feel like some people are hoping the EV industry will fail! Some of the same individuals are also hoping the Covid vaccines will fail. Go figure. In both cases, the resistance lies with being forced to accept it. Remains to see if the EV industry will fail. Vaccine is already there.

Dirt, you are correct about that. Here’s the thing: I don’t know squat about EVs and neither does anyone on here. However, you and I are the only ones that can look this stuff up. White can too. Just to prove my google-fu here’s another one: Danvee, no President ever mandated that horses would be eliminated by such and such a date. The present administration has determined nobody can drive anything but EV after 2035 or something stupid like that. Let the people make their own decisions… Clarkie, keep trying. You're gonna win. Gare-bear, good to hear from you! I thought you had left this conversation but you did find something to add. Good on you! However, a quick search of the internet shows that they want 50% of the new vehicles sold to be EV by 2030. Quite the far cry from what you had stated above. It was probably simple extrapolation let you think 50%=100% and from there your imagination really went wild. It happens! Just try calming down you emotions, think more clearly and I’m sure you’ll be hammering out actual facts in no time. marlin - I agree about the market vs. the government.

I have a young maintenance fella that bought a Tesla. He can drive the vehicle 250 miles between charges. At a Tesla charging station he pays 4.00. It takes 30 minutes to charge. He also has an adapter that he can charge the vehicle at home. It takes 8 hrs to charge off a 120 volt 15amp outlet. Works for him. There's a place for them. But not everywhere.

Cold weather chargingThe researchers found that charging times increased significantly when the weather got cold. When an EV battery was charged at 77 degrees, a DCFC charger might charge a battery to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes. But at 32 degrees, the battery’s state of charge was 36 percent less after the same amount of time. Cold weather cuts range In the winter months when temperatures fall below 20 degrees, electric car batteries take a major hit. A study by AAA found that if you use your electric car’s heater while driving in cold temperatures, your range can be temporarily cut by as much as 41 percent. No room here for physics and engineering....

I guess it is human nature to resist change, but I feel like some people are hoping the EV industry will fail! Some of the same individuals are also hoping the Covid vaccines will fail. Go figure. Actually, I would prefer to drive an electric car. Quiet, less stink and more responsive than a gasser. That's why I was quizzing this fella. My problem is, I have to drive 100-300 miles per day for work. Rain, shine, snow, cold or hot. I could not do my job with any electric car manufactured thus far. Like White said, if it's viable, the market will figure it out. Sick of the stupid mandates!

The ev is a failure for me. I have over 100 mile trip to work own a farm and require my vehical to be reliable. Your other topic is a failer as well. Every week more people I know that are getting covid also had their shots.

My electric coop put in 2 fast charging stations at their office property. The stations are available to anyone. The coop charges 20 cents a minute and a full charge is supposed to take an hour. Not sure about how temps effect this. Teslas supposedly heat the battery before it starts to charge. The coop thinks it will help spread generation costs over a larger user base by having charging stations. The coop BoD is on the green side so I suspect they are selling the power on the cheap side. It appears to be 50KW charger. $12 for 50KWH . Fairbanks cold. We will go with the 5KWH per mile. You get 10 miles for $12. Gas in Fairbanks is about $3.75 a gallon. We will figure 20 miles per gallon For $12 in gas you will get 64 miles. I would stay with the gas. "The Alaska Energy Authority ( the State) recently announced the award of grants totaling $1 million to help Railbelt businesses and other entities install electric vehicle chargers. The nine grant recipients ranged from the Chamber of Commerce in Seward to the Three Bears grocery store in Healy."

So that comes out to $0.016 miles per charge add to that what is 30 minutes of your time(personal or business) worth? Even at $12 hr that' comes $6.016 per charge plus sitting for 30 minutes at the station.
