When experience makes you think you’ve learned it all. When the big sun of pride creeps in….it changes a man. I was talking with Gary Jepson a couple months ago and we were comparing notes. He mentioned how he likes to learn from other trappers. I thought, “Here’s a guy who’s killed more canines than parvo and has reached an age where many of us would hope to make it to and he’s learning.” Experiences like this that kept coming up if what really made me ask this

I am a student of life and everything I love in my life. That being said anytime I hear someone proport themselves as an expert I can help but wonder how many new things they might miss out on because they stoped looking for things to learn.
That is the only way I can see experience becoming any type of hindrance. .. my lord ... who let Oprah join this forum Made me spit my drink out.

The hindrance isn't experience, it's the bigger than life ego. No experience necessary.. There is a difference between cocky and confident. Without confidence it's difficult to succeed. Learning starts the day you're born and should end the day you die.

If it had to be said in a single word, Warrior nailed it. I second that motion.

Allow me to rephrase my response so that even Buckmink can understand
As Johnny Carson used to say, "If you buy the premise; you buy the bit"
For example: A mushroom walks into a bar and says.......
In our case: Experience never becomes a hinderance.
But, then, I see a bunch did buy the bit.
Man who mistake shillelagh for fairy wand; see pixie dust, also.

But, then, I see a bunch did buy the bit. ???? He's trying to say the question of "can experience be a hindrance" is invalid. Which it is not. Experience can be a trap. Say you set a trap in a certain spot in a field for fox or coyote and you're a fairly new to canine trapping. You catch a fox or coyote at said set. Our trapper gets excited and starts plugging in similar sets in similar locations in similar fields all across the country. He might catch a few more canines in that set on those othef locations. Years go by and he's still picking up a few canines every year at his pet set and location but never really catches any more. One day he asks another experienced trapper to go along with him on his line and comes to figure out that it was only dumb luck that he was catching anything at all in that pet set/location.

I believe SNIPERB's example is accurate, but unlikely. Experience is a teacher; the average guy would learn rather than be held stagnant

I believe SNIPERB's example is accurate, but unlikely. Experience is a teacher; the average guy would learn rather than be held stagnant Well i think if we look at what most people consider stagnant then we would have to rethink that. How many times have you seen somone come up with something new , a set a traps a device ect and you automatically see 5,10,20 people say " well I've always done ABC and it's worked I see no need to change". I feel that could be considered stagnation and in that case their experience is a hiderance . Mabye that set or what have you could have gotten them extra animals or made life easier in some capacity but their experience if success with just using say rebar stake mb450s at a dirt hole clouds that judgment.. But their really isn't any right or wrong answer to this

My first job out of high school was at a printing facility. I was hired to bag mail but wanted to learn every job in the place. I soon learned this was a problem for others in the facility unless I was assisting in their department when they were short handed. lol

I was taught to respect the experience of my elders. To some today that is a problem.
How so ? Conversations with young co-workers who commented about much older employees in a disrespectful manner. Young people saying they thought older people didn't know what they were talking about until they got a little older and gained experience themselves. The exuberance of youth is a poor match for the wisdom gained with age. Somebody is going to have to come up with a good arguement to convince me that experience alone at some point becomes a hinderance. The experience isn't the problem, it's the personality. Or at least that is my experience. Others mileage may differ. Lol I

I have purchased quite a few new devices. The only ones still used are cable stakes and the KB stabilizer. My experience with the other devices is what caused me to stop using them. I will try something based on others experience. I will keep it based on my experience.
