I have been so blessed.  As this last year has taught me.  Life is short.  I met a mother that was home schooling her kids.  Tough task for sure.  I did a demo on beaver trapping for them last year.  Dug up the turtle nest in my front yard.  It was the same turtles nests that I had dug up with my kids when they were little.
She mentioned that her group of mothers had gotten an ice fishing demo from the dnr but didnt catch anything.   That hit me pretty hard that these kids needed to go fishing with me. We planned on going Friday morning.   The weather looked horrible,  to cold.  She said kids would be fine,  they would build a fire.  Kids all listened as I explained how to do things.  1st flag 15 minutes after getting set up was crazy.  Those kids are pretty fast.  Funny watching 5 or 6 kids all pulling up the same fish. Lucky it was a 20 inch pike.  Nobody got cut by the line.   Had one fish wrap around a bunch of lilly pads.  They thought it was a giant. We ended up catching 8 pike in 2 hours.  We could keep 3 of them.  I explained the rule about releasing fish between 22 and 26 inches.  They LOVED measuring and releasing the fish.  They actually would fight for who got to release the fish.  I also removed a heart of a fish and they were amazed that it kept beating.  The one boy asked if I could clean all the fish for them. I said I would show him and filleted half a fish and removed the Y bones. Told him that he should clean them when he got home.  He said "what if I do it wrong".   Told him that's how I learned.   If you do it wrong you will just have more smaller pieces and have to maybe pick a bone out while eating.   His mother said he did a great job.  I think I had more fun than the kids!!!
The boy cleaning the fish is 9 and also the boy that I've taken trapping beaver.

Nice, i love teaching kids. We are doing a maple tapping class for my kids 4 h group and jomeschooling co-op this month. Show them how to tap, collect, boil down, and pancakes with the finished product. Nothing better.

Shame on you. My dad taught me to fish and I missed out on all the other things. My wife and I spent our first date fishing and our family continues that tradition! You are doing a good thing and will be rewarded as time goes on, over and over again!

They always try to pay me for my time. When I refuse they give me a large variety of canned goods. From honey to maple syrup, salsa, salsa verde, peaches, pairs, and something I've never had before bruchetta. And when I had my stroke in june they would bring me care packages.
