How crucial is it to have your trap level and stable on a log toilet for muskrats? I found a few spots and never messed with them before. Should I bother driving nails to hook the traps on or do the rats blunder into the trap well enough on their own by just placing the trap below water level. Any pics of your preferred rat log set up would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hole in the bottom of the trap frame can be your friend or whack a flat spot with a ax or sharped a wide blade pix ax for a better angle cutting a flat spot.

I make formed 1/4” hardware cloth baskets sized to fit 1 1/2’s. It takes just two waferhead screws to screw to log at depth of choice with extra long screwdriver. NO chopping/splashing! They work on log crossings and can attach to concrete with flex tape or metal with magnets. They let me make crawl out set that others pass.

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

Not the brightest animals out there, throw the trap on the log, wire off and go.
I usually like them a little more into the water but this works, do not be afraid to move the scat into a better spot for you and I always put some on the pan.
no lure, no bait

A few whacks with a hatchet to make a notch on the log, handful of grass/mud from bottom to set trap on and your trap will be stable and level with the log.
My favorite set for rats when trapping other species.
