Pay it forward to me means- You help out the next person in line- I had no strings attached other than return the act of kindness to someone else, give that auger to a kid or someone that appreciated it and didn’t plan on profiting from it. My original thought was to donate the auger as a door prize to the Lions Club for an upcoming tournament in NW Wisconsin and wish I would have.
This will never taint or prevent me from doing the same thing tomorrow- he’s just not on the short list.

You say there were no strings attached but then go on to tell us the strings that were attached. If it didn't fit his needs, should he have returned it to you? Asked for your permission to sell it?

If he wasn't a close enough friend to feel comfortable saying "what the hey man, I just gave that to you" then you probly won't miss him to much by just writing him off as a jerk. He is probly the kind that tries to have the same level of gear as you, but never goes on his own anyway. Only time he ever goes is with someone else to the spots they have found. His goal is probly to try and sell the gas so he can buy electric to be more like you.

And I'm over here wondering what else you have to give away?? Promise I won't sell it!

If I was to worry about everything I've given away to be sold by the recipient I wouldn't have any friends. The ones that really bother me are the ones who ask for a "good deal" because they want to hey their kids involved just to find it for sale. I've given away a lot of trapping equipment this way. And I still do.

I do body work for a living. Before I went on my own it always shocked me how many "friends" thought that I would do it after hours for less than what I made at the shop. I don't ask my plumber "friends" to replace my pipes after hours for half price.

Once you give it away it's not yours.

I had a friend that was well seasoned about life. He would tell me your friends are the ones that will do you wrong, because you won't let your enemies get close enough. In a more colorful language. A simple statement..... but true

Did a transport today the lady in front of me bought my sandwich at the drive up I went to pay and the lady said nope it’s been paid by the lady in front of you that drove off. It felt kind of weird to me not that I’m not grateful just not expecting it looks like I owe someone a lunch.

Good one Eagleye! It's all good. Thanks for the opportunity to chime in.
We're offering thoughts just like you... what we do here at TMan city.

There are simply two parts to the story narrative;
What you did
What the friend did.

There has been a WHOLE industry and science of psychology built upon the fact that you can only direct your behavior. Not the other person's.
Human interaction is, these same psychologists tell us, often built upon one person's worldview of how things outta be >>> projected by this person >>>> onto another person's behavior.
They shoulda done this.
They coulda done that.
I woulda done this.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, is what we call this in counseling and guess whose "feelings" are triggered during a woulda, coulda, shoulda, involvement?
Well... not the person on the receiving end.
It's all on the person thinking or saying woulda, coulda, shoulda.
This ^^^^^ person's view of how things should be, and how this is not happening in the behavior of someone else causes tension.
Simply said, therapists call it letting the other person "steal your joy." They aren't unhappy about it but the person saying woulda, coulda, shoulda, is.

Eagleye, you did a nice gesture.
Rest in the FACT you can't woulda, shoulda, coulda anyone to change their behavior without manipulative intervention (threats, challenge, reward).

We can only imagine what things would be like if we all didn't try so hard to make other people do what we think they should.
My dog does what I ask better than most people. cool

Blessings,
Mark

I'm going to stick to being leery of any handout, kind of like the person that stops and waves you on when they have the right of way and you are trying to turn. They can't see the other traffic that is going to hit you if you go on their friendly gesture. Poor friend didnt even ask for the auger, was asked if he could use it, and even tried to pay for it. I'm glad I have good friends. This is also exactly why I don't tell people what deer they can and can't shoot if they come hunt with me. It's not worth losing friends over. If someone offered to give me something that I tried to pay for, I don't think I would feel obligated to that person over that item. Probably makes me a bad person but I've anonymously donated plenty, including paying for officer's meals etc, would never expect a thanks considering that was my thanks to them. Donated countless items to the local charity similar to goodwill but an actual charity. For all I know the buyers of those items resold them and made hundreds of dollars. That is no skin off my back, never even thought of it til now. Everyone has different needs I guess.

I think there are a lot of people here who say one thing, but when it would happen to them, they'd feel different...

Shame on your "friend".... He'd never get anything again..... Try to be a good guy and get taken advantage of.... BS..
