Wonder what the hatters are paying.

Beaver will average right at half the top on a average run.

Could this be the first time in 7 years that demand has shifted to outpace supply? A rough winter thrown in could be the icing on the cake. As least as demonstrated by the old style conventional wisdom.

A light at the end of a long dark tunnel?

The beaver average is going to probably be in the 6,8 dollar average . Nice they have stronger demand but this really is with castor a little cheaper not a realistic price increase . With gas and inflation hard to get excited.

A my good friend Mike Kelly pointed out, the castor market is off nearly 20 percent.

Add the two together and I think I'll keep fishing.

I don't blame you. I only want the castor (and a little of the meat) for myself to use, and my boy does most all the hard work of catching them, until we get to the fur shed. lol It'll be a long weekend or two and he'll catch all I need.

An uptick in the hatter beaver market seems strange. I thought the rumor was that the glut of beavers in the pipeline from NAFA shutting down and dumping everything cheap was supposed to fulfill the hatter market needs for over 2 years? Is there a new trend in felt hats? I think if there's any truth to a stronger beaver market, the proof will come at the upcoming FHA sale.
And of course as others have said, even if a beaver pelt price increases by 50%, we're still only talking $4-$5. That number is offset by higher gas prices and lower castor prices.

Well, there I did it, dawdled around long enough that I missed the bottom of the market.

20 dollars top price for beaver pelts is not an increase.
2x semis dk sold for $27.60 usd at the last FHA sale, and that is far from a top beaver.

Sure, but look at the map of North America and realize how much country is way south of you, there are a LOT of beaver sold in the U.S. south where Groeny buys, and yes they get better as you go north. But Groeny buys almost all of his well south of where you are, so of course your skins sell for more. Remember, a lot of beaver trappers in the U.S. catch them in T-shirt weather, or close to it. Not meant to sound condescending because I know you understand this already, just reminding you that they are pretty flat in most places down here.

Smoke and mirrors.
My fall(open water) semis 2x dk sold higher at the last FHA sale, and that is far from a top beaver.
We are talking TOP prices as indicated not avgs.
Many top beaver come from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin,NY and Maine sections..

Yep, Boco you're correct there, and early fall beaver even in those places are still pretty flat.

Sounds like market still sucks for otter and beaver. 100 otter and 50 dollar beaver might get everyone excited, not exactly the easiest two critters to process.

$40 otter and $20 beaver is a move in the right direction, for now. I never realized there were ever $50 beaver in Alabama.

I hear all the time...trapping isn't about the money, it's about being free, it's about our heritage, it's about the romance of being outdoors.

After reading through this thread...it's all about the money. LOL

I just sold my 77 rough skinned beaver pelts to a traveling fur buyer and was happy. I kept the tail, castor, and carcass. He took the pelts with a "straight thru" nose count price. I hope he makes money as w/o him it would be finish or discard them all. And I now have room in the freezers to skin and store more for finishing until a later auction if I choose. I will guess I will make as much on them as I do on my coyotes per animal. I even Back Cut 5 of them for him to finish and try and see if the belly fur is truly worth more than back fur............... the mike
