A big negative of drags is the expense of rigging up long chains and quality grapples.

Another downside of drags ? Weight. Guys that travel and trap in the South will get this. 100 drags and 8 ft of chain on each = Thats at least = 500 lbs of extra gear. HUGE to a guy trapping out of a small to medium size truck. LoL!!

Not wanting specific details to get this deleted, but how do you dispatch on something that has an 8ft reach? I’ve stepped in too close on a regular earth anchored cat and got hit by the back claws as he lunged at me. Can’t imagine one having an 8 foot reach, lol.

Skinning is what caused my carpal tunnel problems beginning years back. Hands cramp up quick now when Im skinning bcats and otters around their shoulders and head. Cant grip, hold and pull like I used to since surgery last Sept.

Not a lot of skinning on this run. Only otters, beavers, bcats, fox.

All other species will not go under my knife.

When I used long chains and drags years ago...most times they were wrapped up to trap...so, short reach.

I dont use em around home due to bear population. They will take it for a ride or climb. Ain't t got time for that.

Trapping from SxS is even more weight restricted.

Patrick, doing good, buddy. I don’t care what you say. If you’re not catching coyotes it’s because there aren’t many around. I’ve seen you work.

Not sure why coyotes seem to have left this property. Im hoping after this rain clears out and then rain again on Monday that the cooler and mostly clear weather will put em on the move back thru here.

Landowner is ecstatic about the coon and possum count, but you know how it is.....coyotes and bcats kills are way more impressive. Landowner says just a few weeks ago a coyote track was somewhat rare on this place...then last week some of the roads looked like a pack of dogs had walked them. Unusual deal 4 sure.

I feel like Ive done a good removal job if I can maintain a 2 coyote per day avg for entire 14 day run. I have done a couple times on this same property a few years ago. Im going in the hole...quickly...only 2 so far in 3 checks.

Time will tell....or tell on me....lol.

That property will already have a better turkey and quail population. Let’s see some more tomorrow, God willing!

Another tactic is to use cable or chain to tie off to trees...much lighter. Not an ideal tactic but it can keep you in the field.

Im starting to wonder how much longer I can run this heavy. There are a many things my hands and wrists wont let me do since that dang surgery.....accurate archery being one. Wish I had never had the surgery done. But, my thumb muscles were already weakening from carpal tunnel syndrome for too long.

I hope you aren’t getting the rain we’re getting down here. Think their .5” was exceeded the first 30 minutes it started this morning! Still raining now. I know my traps along the creek will be under water until tomorrow evening!!!

Cruise the yard sales and get a cement bit. With wolf fangs even a 1/2 hole makes a big difference

https://www.harborfreight.com/21-in-sds-max-type-masonry-drill-bit-set-3-pc-62793.html

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-1-in-x-18-in-2-Cutter-SDS-Carbide-Bit-48-20-8285/300879149

Or buy a short one and weld a shank on it. You will have to clean hole 3 or 4 times bit will work. And get a cordless with cement setting. Use cement setting on ship bit as well.

Or a steel bit will work and last

Weaker results today. Got rest of good locations set today.

Still no additional coyotes caught...yet. Tracking conditions were pretty good on these sand and mud roads after rain last night ended. Only saw 4 different sets of coyote tracks on these 3500 acres today......probably 20 plus miles of roads. Only 1 coyote worked a flat set...missed pan about an inch.

Big signpost rub on banks of the Savannah River...been here a while and still getting rubbed by area bucks..
