I'm going to make a Backbreaker using northern castors. Backbreaker has traditionally been made for the past 30 years or so with southern castor. It has become so in demand that I can't get enough southern castors to keep up. So, that's why I'm thinking of making a Northern Backbreaker using northern castors. I've found that Backbreaker with northern castor works great up north, just like regular Backbreaker. Down south the Backbreaker with northern castor isn't quite as effective. It will attract them, but not as well as regular Backbreaker. That was my experience anyway. It must be the same with the Wilson's Green beaver lure. Dad sent me a pint of it about 28 years ago. I used it on my line down here, and I couldn't catch a beaver with it. I know it's a great beaver lure, but it didn't work for me down here. I've talked to other southern trappers who have tried it and they had similar luck with it. I've talked to others who had some luck with it.

It works great here in NE Tex. But I also use Sweetwater Flattail also and have great success with it as well. I’m assuming it is made with Northern beaver castors but I may be wrong.

We get American castor up to $180 a pound and I'll be trying your new Northern Backbreaker too boss Lol If it gets that high, I won't be making Backbreaker - I won't able to afford to. Appleroad uses approx an ounce per gallon of bait....Like Paul the high price of castor does decrease profits.....and as we all know being it is an universal attractor I will not reduce the % in the formula.....or the amount of solution per gallon of basemeat

I know that it is a great lure but it didn't work here.

I get my northern castor out of the UP it’s 180 degrees different then the sour willow castor we have here it screams, “yep I’m not from here” to the local beaver it works very well everywhere I’ve use it.

Appleroad uses approx an ounce per gallon of bait....Like Paul the high price of castor does decrease profits.....and as we all know being it is an universal attractor I will not reduce the % in the formula.....or the amount of solution per gallon of basemeat It would be nice if Backbreaker only had an ounce to the gallon -lol. Backbreaker is the most expensive lure to make for me, because of all the castor in it. Like Cletis, I use an ounce to the gallon in my bait solution. I try to use northern castor in my bait solution, canine and cat lures in order to keep the southern stuff for Backbreaker.

I have always used northern castor in my lures and baits and hope hope hope the prices fall fall fall. Between bottles, jars, and castor prices, it's getting tougher to turn the profit wheel full crank.
