Me and the wife both got new tires this last summer. Instead of paying the tire shop to take them I brought them home because I have seen on the internet raised beds made out of them. My concern is the tire holding heat through the summer from the sun. Does any one have any experience with these?? I have them lined up with top soil and horse manure in them.. any do's and dont?

You have to watch out for the tires heating up in the sun they'll scorch any leaves or vines touching or close to them

Heating up would be good for early starts or crops like like heat, sweet potatoes comes to mind. But by mid summer could be an issue. Mulch, ground covers or painting white might alleviate that.

I could see it helping early tomatoes then covering the tires with straw, light colored, mulch once they get up some size or heat becomes an issue.

That what I was thinking warrior if I could paint it white or just cover with dirt or mulch if that would help. Wasn't sure if it would or not.

Also wasn't sure what to actually plant in them. Im going to have two in ground garden spots, I thought about my pepper plants in a few and maybe watermelon?

Maybe semi truck tires would work better. Just me thinking out loud.

I use them for potatoes. Works pretty good and is a heck of alt easier retrieving then come harvest time.

they work great for sweet taters. I would paint them white if I was to use them for anything else I think.

I use the larger tires from my pick up. I cut the sidewalls out with a metal cutting saws all blade. I fill them with a 50-50 mix of mushroom compost and topsoil. Plant onions, tomatoes and squash in them.

Tires never made for scorched potato leaves here

We use a big tractor tire to grow our mint tea in. It works good, easy to mow around and contains the tea nicely. My wife gets about 15-20 gallons of tea out of that little patch each summer.
