Just curious what critters get in a high fence? I’d imagine coons and possums won’t have an issue, but what about your larger predators like fox or bobcats? Do they climb or will they be like a coyote and find spot somewhere under the fence? Or will all the critters do that?
Have a landowner in the process of high fencing his place and was wondering what to look for next year. Right now with all the traffic the main thing I’m targeting is just coons and possums and he doesn’t have a whole lot of those either.

Cats, fox and skunks will go through the fence like it was not even there. And if there is not a predator fence on or just under the ground, coyotes will dig under. They can also get in if there are creeks running through the fence.

Thanks. That’s what the landowner and I discussed, but I just wasn’t sure. He said he’d have me a drivable road around the perimeter just for that reason.

An almost long term sustainable population of nest predators will be fenced in there. Depending on the type fence many other species will easily come and go. Coyotes and red fox will dig their own crawl unders.Bobcats and coons will climb and jump in and out.

High fence areas will NOT keep out (or in) predators. Its a myth that they will.

Trapping there will keep predators in check just like on unfenced properties. That fence wont even stop deer movement in and out 100%.

Iowa,
Rabbits, Armadillo, coon, possum skunk ,bobcat, bvr, otter(if there's water of course) , groundhogs, fox, coyote, wild hogs, javelina(I know not in GA.) deer, I have caught all these going under high fence. The first nine listed were in 220 body grips in smaller crawls, the others were snared in larger crawls.
As you run the perimeter tie flagging in fence either directly above crawl or just before you get to it then you can slow down at each flag and know there's a crawl coming up.

High fence place I do year round predator control for has a hot wire around the entire place. Doesn't slow the predators down one bit. Coyotes just dig down a little further out from the fence. One place I worked for had a 3' wire "apron" laying on top of the ground around the outside of the fence. Coyotes would find softer ground and just dig underneath it. A trapper is the only real form of predator control.

Rodney, I trapped a few places like that. Before one place put the apron out, they dug at will, anywhere they wanted. When they put the apron out, I figured it would fix problem and I’d be out of a job. They got right down to it and got in there.

Nothing is 100%. An apron, electric fence along with trapping, poison, night vision, thermals and snaring does a very good job. I can see a big difference.
They do dig under, but not nearly as much. What I like most about electric fences is it helps keep peoples dogs out. (Most of the time)
The other thing that works very well is a good trained dog or dogs on 24/365 security.

K9 security and that poison probably don't work well together.

For some reason this place doesn’t have a lot of “large” predators so to speak. Nothing on cameras and no tracks. His main purpose for the fence is to keep feral dogs out. When he gets pics of 5-6 dogs on his protein feeders at one time, he had a problem. That issue was remedied the first couple of years. Nothing like sitting in the stand and a pack of dogs run a 160” deer off or by you while archery hunting.
I thought with the ferals gone that some larger predators might move in.

They will also go over as well as under if they are in a hurry, but have seen it several times when they were being pushed they went over the fence like you going up a set of stairs

Gary Blair once had an article in the Trappers magazine about trapping in and around sheep pens where he had a photo of a coyote going up and over a electric high tension fence where ever other strand was electrified

Animals will find a way in it might take a bit but they will get in if they want to

Agreed, snares too. There is not much you can do about snakes and birds of prey without a good dog, Coyotes would still be a big problem, but there is not much you could not solve with a good dog inside a high fence.

The best fence money can buy won’t keep coyotes out. It’s a deterrent like a dead bolt but won’t stop the most determined. Once in they do the unmentionable, and recreate more like themselves. Job security for a trapper. The fence is only a deterrent for the coyotes everything else passes back and forth like already mentioned above.
