With that price range I now completely understand the complete lack of ability when it comes to trapping nuisance beaver around me. If I had a dime for every time they educated beaver around here (leaving me to clean up their mess) I would have to use a compass to find my way around my mansion. MC Donalds fry cooks start higher than that.

That said, its probably a good opportunity for a young guy...or girl.

If they (the feds) plan to use my tax dollars to trap against me, the least they (the state of Wisconsin) could do is offer a free trapping license to anyone trapping more than 20 beaver a year…that alone is about a dollar a beaver and just a tiny bit more economical than employing a g-trapper. Again, pound sand and stay off my area!!

How much do you think a beaver trapper that is given a PU, gas card, traps, lure, waders, gauntlets, gun ammo, potato rake, uniforms plus any other thing my need except lunch should start at?

Here in the west it’s a pretty good gig, especially if you’re young and single. You get a government issued horse and dogs and everything. Still doesn’t pay that well but if I were to work for APHIS I’d rather be up in the high country chasing lions vs trapping beavers that are clogging a culvert off the side of the road.

The government trappers I know have some pretty neat stories though and they’ve had the opportunity to be on some crazy cool projects all over the world. Trapping non native foxes on the Aleutian Islands, protecting wild salmon runs from seal predation in the northwest, working with biologists and researchers down in Latin America trapping Jaguars. Obviously they’re not sending all the gov. trappers on special projects but if you know what you’re doing it’s a job that has its perks. It’s a job that also has its risks and guys do die on the job.

Like I said though this is only from what I’ve seen and experienced here in Utah. In Wisconsin I doubt you’re flying around in planes chasing predators from the sky or driving around in a truck with a horse trailer mounted on the bed and dog boxes on the sides. But you could probably transfer to a different area later on if you stick it out. For the right guy it’s a great job, but it’s definitely not for everyone.
