I remember in the early 90’s when I started trying to run property lines for logging the old USGS topo maps had magnetic declination at 7 degrees for my area. The maps were 1970 models. When I used 7 degrees I kept running to the left of the established corners, which meant I was using too much declination. After finding a N/S township line that I could see for several miles, I determined I could drop the declination down to 5 degrees and started coming out right on the corners. Today with the help of the internet it is much easier to get the declination of a location. Ours is just under 2 degrees today. In a few years with the pole moving, magnetic north and true north will line up in my area. I was going to say anyone who has done basic map and compass work understands declination and why having the most recent map is important. I wonder which the rapid recent shift if they are able to keeps maps current.

I remember reading the survey notes from the 1890’s when they surveyed the sections in SE Oklahoma. The surveyors took a bearing on Polaris (North Star) every night. If it was too cloudy to see stars the ran on the bearing the last night they were able to see.

The north and south pole have flip flopped many times in earth's history... There was a big concern last year or so that as far south as it had moved, that we we are seeing a flip

Annual declination is shown on charts. A compass rose is shown to compare true north with magnetic north. Thank goodness for GPS and for compasses.

In the past 5 years its moved more than the last 100 In the last 100 years we have developed much more accurate and precise instruments.

The north and south pole have flip flopped many times in earth's history... I saw this a some scientific show several years ago. Geologists could see it in certain rocks??? It was above my pay level.

I have seen it change many times in a half hour period of time when I am turned around in the woods looking at my compass.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!
