Oklahoma	I remember in the early 90’s when I started trying to run property lines for logging the old USGS topo maps had magnetic declination at 7 degrees for my area. The maps were 1970 models. When I used 7 degrees I kept running to the left of the established corners, which meant I was using too much declination. After finding a N/S township line that I could see for several miles, I determined I could drop the declination down to 5 degrees and started coming out right on the corners. Today with the help of the internet it is much easier to get the declination of a location. Ours is just under 2 degrees today. In a few years with the pole moving, magnetic north and true north will line up in my area.

The surveyors took a bearing on Polaris (North Star) every night. If it was too cloudy to see stars the ran on the bearing the last night they were able to see.
