Dave, you can go to about any hardware store and buy a tank valve replacement kit. The ones I've bought have everything you'll need to put in a new flush/ fill valve and the flapper too. They also can come with the tank grommets too. All you have to do is shut off your water supply to the tank, flush the toilet and soak up the little bit of left over water in the tank (if you want to) and replace your old parts with new. Do it yourself, its easy to do and its a lot cheaper than paying a plumber if you're wanting to save some money. X2 $20 and 15 minutes. The only thing not included is new water line.

For$15, buy one of the kits at lowes and replace.

So, you have the "service guard protection plan" where they are supposed to fix your appliances. Then why are you turning the heat down on your water heater and taking sponge baths? Shouldn't they be required to replace your defective water heater? I'm not familiar with the kind of protection plan you mentioned, but unless I'm missing something, it sure doesn't sound like you are getting your monies worth Dave.
I know you can fix the toilet yourself. And I'm confident you are more than capable to do it too. Watch some YouTube videos and work your way through it.

Or if you were ever in the Army, you know what a cathole is. Keep it simple. Yep but no surface pooping!
I have nothing clever to put here.

keep the water off , fill buckets in the tub and use that to flush and wait for the plumber if you don't feel comfortable working on a toilet.
Ha! My poor old ma did that for years until I found out. Many water utilities will give you a dye packet to help locate leaks.
