There was guy named Cresson Kearney, who worked a long time I believe as a fed in Civil Defense that tested out a lot of things simulating living in a immediate post-nuclear exchange world. He wrote a book called Nuclear War Survival Skills. I think my copy is the original 1977 copyright, I might have gotten the 1987 update, but I know I haven't seen the 2001 edition. Seems like a person can still find it on-line, but it might be hard to find about now.

One thing you'll learn is, for fallout protection, earth is your friend, lots and lots of earth...
