I always figure 25% to 30% less with commission/shrinkage with auction houses.

I don't know how you can avoid shrinkage when the last receiving dates are 2-3 months before the auction. Doubt they are holding it in their freezer for you.

I did ship some to NAFA..........................once.

That varies widely IMO. There’s others with far more experience than me, but it will depend on age, time of year, and nature of the waterway. Where I go in Vermont, I trap every few years so the beaver are usually fully mature. Decent pods, but some of the isolated ponds you locate beavers, pods will be small, fur usually exceptional. In Nj, Pa and now here, the same held true.

But in my opinion, river beaver have better castor, lower quality fur. It seems to me, someplace beaver are frequently scent marking, those beavs have better, more full heavy castors. Whether their glands become hyper active or what, I can’t say. My heaviest castor this year was 10 oz and I had quite a few 6-8 0z. Again mostly mature beaver from up north and here.

Couldn't have said it better.

Have heard a lot of complaints re shipping to auction house. I sent to nafa 3 times and each time my sold weight was right there with what I weighed em out at. That said, I also decided to quit while I’m ahead and have found other markets

Like the auction or not you need them to set the price.

Problem today is the auction dates are so late that the majority of the season is over before you know what the big guys are paying.

Price has been dropping all season.

Now it will be interesting to see what happens?

Been a very long time shipper of my fur up to North Bay Ontario; just checked my on-line account with them and I averaged $6.69 an ounce, $107.06 a lb. Couldn't be happier!

FHA doesn't set the price on caster or fur. They may post sale results, but the end user sets the price. If FHA is setting the price, are they the ones to thank for tanked fur prices? Or do they only set prices when it is good?

Semantics. What is meant here is it helps to see where the market is at when you have an outfit that publicly discloses what it was sold for, and they had more than just a couple hundred lbs for sale.

And in this case it looks like they are right where they were last year at about this same time. No drop in price.

You can tell when something is hot, when the lowest or poorest grade is over 70% the value of the best grade. Wow if one caught 100 beaver and skinned them and sold them frozen as hatters for $8 bucks that is $800. At $90 per lbs. for the lower grade castor and 6 ounces per beaver that is $34.00 or $3400. If this keeps up it will be like buffalo hunting, harvest them take the tongues and skin them and leave the rest for the coyotes, bear and wolves, at least in WI one could.

6 ounces of castor per beaver? No tongue cutting here. Doing good to get 1.6-2 ounces dry castor per beaver on average.
