Found out the local grocery store got Crawfish tails in stock. Never having eaten them, how do you prepare them, and what exactly does Crawfish taste like ?

They taste just like crawdads. I like to seine up a five gallon bucket full. Pop the meat out of the tail. Get a salad bowl full out of a five gallon bucket. Then fry them in butter. Most people cook them in crab boil. You can buy it at any grocery. They are done when they turn red. It doesnt take long. Pull them in half and eat the tail meat then suck the inside out of the head. Good cooked like that too

I assume the store carries cooked tail meat. If so use them in recipes much the same way as you might shrimp. The texture is similar though the flavor is a little stronger. Closest comparison would be white meat vs dark.

Caution though there's both seasoned and unseasoned available, seasoned is invariably cajun so they may not pair well with lighter recipes.

Read the label. Most of them come from China.

Same ways you would cook shrimp. Season the tails and season some flour. Add a splash of buttermilk to the bowl of seasoned tails (or egg wash), roll in flour, and fry.

Season tails and drop into a sauce.

Make etouffee or crawfish fettuccine (recipes online).

Add a little crab boil, onions, butter, and perhaps lemon to a pot of water and boil...

Eat them straight boiled, or add tails to a stuffed baked potato or salad.

Lots of options, but make sure you buy Louisiana crawfish tails if given the chance!

I've never ate them but was considering trying them. So you can remove the tail meat from them when they're still raw?

I won't buy any mudbugs, (or anything else that I can avoid) from SE Asia as I've seen how they farm them. Gooks use the rice paddy's that they fertilize with human waste and the C-dads eat it, so no telling what kind of disease might be in them.

The Chinese crayfish have some preservative in them that makes them virtually inedible. I bought some crayfish tails at Walmart that were called Boudrheaux's Crawfish Tail Meat, I incorrectly believed they were from Louisiana. I later found the fine print on the back said that they were from China. They left a terrible metallic taste in my mouth and coated my tongue and mouth. I've bought Chinese and Vietnamese shrimp from Walmart that used the same foul preservative.

My favorite, if there are any left over from a boil, is to tail them out and make ettouffee the next day.

Care to share what this “foul preservative” might be. It has to be listed on the ingredients.

How much do crayfish cost at your place? We sell them from 1500 to 2000 p. per 1 kg, depending on size.

I got a bunch from a friend that had a seafood shop, I thought they were kinda tasteless and watery, granted, these were getting "old" but still alive.
Maybe fresh caught is better, or from different areas?, maybe why hot sauce was invented?, grin
