South Dakota is renewing their CRP program They will pay up to 2800 bucks an acre to let it grow up to prevent erosion and added money for habitat They had this in ky and lot of farmers that got on it more than paid for their farms I looked at one last year that had 2 years left on the program It was getting 8400 per year on 60 plus acres It was signed up for 15 years The farm was 112 total acres and the guy bought it for 97,000 back in 2007 So he got paid 30,000 to buy the farm ! He still had some acres to grow tobacco

We hunted a huge ranch out west years ago antelope type country not the best ground for farming or grazing in some places. The landowner said that CRP paid for a large part of it because the land prices were so low when he purchased the ground. His home place was the town of Chance, SD at one time, it was a interesting story.

For a couple hundred dollars more they could buy the land outright? The land that they could do well on would be cheaper then that to get good results from.

Nobody in SD is getting 2600 dollars an acre CRP payment.
Around here CRP what a guy can get cash rent.

I should clarify, the 2800 could be possible the first year to offset seed cost to plant it to whatever is required for a cover.
And in case anyone is wondering I don't own any CRP ground

jaybird- I think you're a little confused, maybe rolling 2 programs into 1.
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a federal program that has been around since 1985. At its height in 2007, about 36 million acres were enrolled under various contracts. CRP decreased steadily from 2008 through 2018, dropping at least a 1/3rd of its greatest enrollment down to about 22 million. It was actually targeted to decrease to below 18 million but in 2018, it was increased again, mostly through a grassland preservation (rangeland) sub-program and is now back up to the mid 20 millions of acres. When CRP first got started there was no clause that any of it had to be publicly accessible. I think some the sub-programs now have that as part of the treatment "conditions". CRP early on was heavily targeted at land that was more erodible but that has also changed into different goals, some now are more riparian targeted and other clauses.
I think what you are talking about if you're talking specifically about a state program and specifically about South Dakota is the state "Walk-In" program that is for public hunting. Yes, the most a landowner can get from the state is $2,800 for a parcel enrolled. Some landowners "double dip" by renting their fed CRP land to the state for Walk-In areas. CRP land in heavy grassy cover is some of the best pheasant and white-tail deer hunting in our state, I've shot plenty of both out of such land.
The state-rented Walk-In Areas can be about any land a landowner wants to put up. Some of it is very marginal for game, some is good. Most of my antelope hunting in SD in the last 15-20 years has been on large tracts of Walk-In Area rangeland. Other parcels I've walked there appears to be little habitat for game. Its sort a roll of the dice.
But I don't have to ask anyone to cross the fence. I also don't have to have a roll of Uncle Bens to pay a landowner for hunting so I often take my chances on these Walk-In Areas. It is what it is.

There is a program called WRP ( wetland restoration program ) that's similar to CRP . It offers a large one time payment . Payments are based on the quality of the land and once enrolled can never be taken out of the program . Been seeing some land owners that have not been able to sell poor land for a stupid high price enroll in it . Then collect a one time large payment and then offer it up for sale as hunting land at a lower price to get maximum profit . New buyer can't do anything with land to generate an income off it . And all they do is pay taxes on it every year . I know a few guys who have bought some of this land thinking it was a great opportunity to have their own hunting land only to have buyer's remorse after a couple years

SD is pushing habitat along with the tail bounty program I wish they did the habitat work first but at least they are getting people involved and kid also the got a month head start on the adults this year and it started earlier to improve their chances when the breed is on. Not sure how the State programs work yet they are new but that money could be involved in the OP post somehow.

Yes and that pasture land can be enrolled That’s what people don’t understand it doesn’t have to be crop land Farms in hart co KY were in the program in the mid 2000’s that are sink holes and cedar thickets What you guys are failing to under stand is the crp payment is the life of the contract the purchase price per acre is one time The crp payments can and have paid for a ton of farms here in Ky

What you fail to understand j is that right out my back door you’d be hard pressed to find a tract of land you could buy for under $13,000 an acre. The farmers that pay that and rent that land where I live scoff at that money. Just the way it is here in my world nowadays.

Wow == I must live in the land of milk and honey then -- can't touch much of anything for under 20k per -- we don't even know what crp is here --- however just mention wetlands and carbon credits and our junk ground is suddenly worth a fortune.
