I bought a Grummann square back one time, from a friend, the same length as my Monarch. Darn thing was too heavy for me then, and I was in my early fiftys. Aftter being out all day, and packing 15-20 beaver up the bank to the truck when I got in, Didn't hardly have enough left in me to put that Grumman up on the truck! Heavy? One of the reasons why I like mine is it is so light.

But the fronts on those canoes were strongly built that you could have put a rope on it and dragged it to the truck, cause that style of Al they used dragging over rocks was no problem.

You can't even make a offer on a good grumand canoe around here for under 500. if we had to make the offer in Canadian dollars 250 US would be 315 Can so that is probably part of it also the way people use canoes here vs there is different. unfortunately now if you go anywhere a jet ski or ski boat can put in your likely to get swamped by one if your in a canoe unless you stick to early morning https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1006777603377422?ref=search&referral_code=marketplace_search&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A5f658505-f254-405d-9afd-ab4276065da9 https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/546658136799893/?ref=search&referral_code=marketplace_search&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A5f658505-f254-405d-9afd-ab4276065da9 https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/431384248503008/?ref=search&referral_code=marketplace_search&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A5f658505-f254-405d-9afd-ab4276065da9

Fixing rivets by replacement with new rivets while more technical than epoxy isn't that challenging if the metal being riveted is still sound. true they are not hard to set. there are some god videos out on how I still use an epoxy when setting new rivets , a little JB weld Marine is cheap insurance. drill out clean around the hole , a tooth pick worth of epoxy in the hole rivet in and drive a 2 pound hammer makes a decent bucking bar

Lighter is better when your trapping, for all the obvious reasons!

I love my square stern grumman canoe for trapping. Used to use a Canadian scott canoe and loved it but way to heavy now for my back.

There are many kinds of canoes to use for trapping and other purposes. I have several for different applications. When I am on the river which is rocky in places,or bigger water I use my 14 ft fibreglass Kawartha canoe-fairly light and tough.I normally wont be loading or unloading it on the bike or truck more than a couple times a day.It handles well on the river for longer trips and in the wind on bigger water.
For muddy small pond trapping or ditch trapping I use a sportspal 12 ft.it is super light and I can throw it on and off the bike all day long with little effort. It is beat up and leaks a little, but that is irrelevant for its purpose to me. I dont believe that there is an "all around" canoe.

I have three aluminum canoes, the last one was free on the curb, everyone around here wants a kayak, they only are paddling around. The aluminum skiff I picked up two weeks ago curb shopping scrap went straight to the metal recycler for .70 a pound, it was junk, or I'd have tried to sell it for $50.

Aluminum is cheaper, but noisy and tends to grab rock when it hits.
