Anyone long chain beaver traps, by that I mean having 8-10 feet of chain on a beaver rap securely staked in the water w/o entanglement?

I've done it many times and had great success. Many times I've had the beavers high and dry up on the bank and some were asleep when I walked up to them.

I have used this method many times. I look for at least 3 feet of water that the trapped beaver can reach. I however added weight to the trap so the total weight was about 10lbs. I had a bunch of sash/window weights that worked well. I had a couple of beaver over the years that created a clear cut on the bank, and obviously never drowned. These were always very big beaver.

What? Is there some other way to do it?

The added weight to the trap Is the deciding factor In getting that beaver drowned.

Following this, hope it expands in discussion! I am getting tired of trying to find my weights that never seem to be in the right place year to year, or carrying into new areas. Drowning rods and long chaining have my strong attention.

I do it with a 750 and a 8 foot extension cable and aim for a hind foot. I also have a shock spring in the chain.

I’ve been doing it for at least 10 years. Haven’t had a problem. Same as any other chain on a trap, give it plenty of swivels and 8 or 10 feet is best. Try an keep the risk of entanglement on the shore to a minimum. I find them resting on the shore or swimming around in circles. The more comfortable you can make them the better. I stake to the bank with Rebar or cable whatever your choice. Just make sure it’s solid.

Do what works for you but having a fresh killed beaver in the boat or truck makes a bloody mess for me.I’ll take a cold stiff beaver over that sloppy mess any day.

Long chains 8-12 feet work great. I use alot on rocky shallow streams ect.

What about cable. Could you use 8-10' of cable instead of chain?

Yes. I do this all the time and it works great. If it's sandy I even stake up on the bank.

Been doing this since I was a kid. Our river here is a very solid rock/gravel bottom and there is now way to get a drowning rod in the bottom. I am way to lazy to carry plates or bags of rocks around! I use ten feet of chain with about 9 or ten pounds of weight added to the trap. The chain adds more weight so I prefer it to cable. I target back feet and try to get them on the bottom fast. Here all our beaver live in bank dens so I have to be very careful when I set to make sure there is not a denning hole close enough for a beaver to crawl into and not drown. Getting them out is a giant pain. You will only make that mistake once. laugh

I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

I have too...no issues

But I prefer them "out" when I get there

I always thought carrying a cold stiff beaver to the truck was a chore... A freshly killed beaver is like carrying a 60 lb bag of buckshot. LOL

I use a 10 ft + chain with a saber tooth style drag. I push a wooden stake through the gap on the end of the drag. If the drag happens to leave the stake, it’s going to be when the beaver heads the direction I want it to which will be away from deep water.

Sometimes they’ll make a mess, sometimes they’re just sitting there. I haven’t had one go anywhere, yet. It works very well actually

I really like to do it on spots that I have to walk in/kayak into because I'm not carrying even my fiberglass rods that far. My setups always have the options to be converted to slide drowners when the situations present themselves to do it.

Just be sure to carry bolt or cable cutters depending on whether you use cable or chain in case the stupid things wrap up on a tree you didnt see, or a have a polesaw on the truck...
