Thinking about getting certified for shallow water dives. Idea is do dive for snagged lures. I can probably get my money back for the gear and classes in 1 or 2 dives. The rest will be profit.
My wife and I had PADI certifications and started formal diving in 1975 but when we were kids, we had scuba gear and played around the piers at the lake in shallow water. I loved going on spearfishing trips in the ocean, stalking and sneaking up on grouper! Hunting with any gun is fun and spearguns are no exception. Go for it, never quit learning something new!!

either it is a lot more than I think or it may take you a few more dives than you think.
certification class looks like 250 and then gear a full basic setup being about 900
it looks liek often shops rent by the week so you could try a week rental and only be out around 150 for the weeks dives + air fills
250+150 if you know a lot of hot fishing spots for snags might pay for that with lures
YouTube Ed the diver. He got 1500 bucks worth in 45 minutes. That's of course retail. He sells them from his tow behind trailer. Spend a few hours diving. It would be easy to get 3 grand worth. Sell for half.
Paid for my bait in Canada one year diving. Went to the clearest and most beautiful lake I had ever seen in Canada. We went looking for Splake and when we launched the boat, I was shocked at the water color and clarity. So, I told the guy that was with me I was bringing scuba gear up the next year and dive this lake.
When we got to the lodge the next year, I was joking with the owner about bringing scuba gear to Canada and he looked like I broke some international treaty or something, like he was in shock. He said his 85-year-old father, while fishing earlier in the week, got confused and threw his favorite rod and reel in the lake on a cast. They went back and tried dragging a large hook on the bottom but couldn't retrieve it.
He told me where it was on the lake and I went out and found it in 8 minutes in 12 feet of water. I could see the drag marks on the bottom, so I followed them and the rod was at the edge of the marks where they dragged it too.
I walked up and handed it to his father and at first, he thought I was just showing him a rod and then he said it was just like his, he got tears in his eyes when I told him it was his.
His Son took care of my bait bill that week.
I did go try the clear blue lake with a light sand bottom, looked like the keys. But that 200-foot-deep lake was super cold, not fun without a dry suit, I only went to 45 or 50 feet and because I didn't wear gloves at the thermocline it was so cold my hands were like searching for the right can in a cooler full of Ice water. I could see why there were no weeds and only coldwater fish, nothing else could survive.

I lost count on the dives I have done. Starting with mine clearance then salvage and after that had my own dive center for 15 years. I don't get wet these days unless they force me with money.

I just happened to have put a GoPro on my mask so you can see the dive in Canada. Pretty sterol cold lake and not much to see. It would have been better if the sun was bright and not cloudy, but you can't control the weather.

I was NAUI certified years ago, I heard they no longer exist. They were geared towards the Navy regs, that's why we used them. I would like to get recertified as well! Diving is awesome!

You find out if your dry suit is really dry when you get certified in November Alaskan saltwater. I got my cert from PADI in the early 1980s. I've never taken a dive in freshwater, just salt in Maine and Alaska.
Visibility under water is a consideration if your looking for small objects. I bet if there was big money in what your describing you would see folks doing it...

There is a bridge going out of town into a rural county on a major highway near me. I bet there are several pistols in that river. Scares me a little to dive in a river.
How many lies will people believe before they realize their own idiocy?

magnet fishing....it sucks to dive where the visibility is terrible...not much can be accomplished.

Retired public safety/rescue/ice diver. Yup, rivers are a love / hate relationship with me too... love to do drift diving, hate the evidence and body recovers. Just short a couple of elective courses to become PADI master diver.

NAUI certified. About 50 years ago. Been a long time since I have even gone swimming. Had a lot of fun diving and.snorkling. Cold water high lakes is were I did most. Lots of fishing gear, but it looses it's luster fast sitting under water. Good times of my youth.
