In wild hog country, the .270 or my beloved .25-06 are just about perfect. You will never feel under gunned and they both shoot very flat.

I suspect you will fall in love with that lil beauty

If he will shoot it ten times I am sure of it. Hunt with it and he wont ever trade or sell it.

First animal I touched the trigger on was a mule deer buck at every bit 250 yards. It just folded up. Had a love affair with that rifle ever since.

If I were you I'd offer to buy that gun so you could keep it.

I don't have a Vanguard but I got one of my boys a 270 for Christmas. Very pleased with that caliber.

I understand. Just hard to imagine improving on that gun by doing anything internally or even messing with the bedding.

Maybe some bondo on your cheek ? laugh

Could be a Hogue over-molded. That's what I have. Really like it. A bit heavier than a wood stock

I don't know about the Vanguard stock, but the Monte Carlo stock on my 300 MV is perfect for me to cheek in. Otherwise, you can purchase a gel comb cover that works fine ( got one for my Beretta Silver Pigeon O/U shotgun), in a pinch, even a hand towel folded over the top will suffice.

I won't put a permanent one on mine even if I needed it, the wood grain is too gorgeous to hide.

Probably a nice leather on like this. Really going against my usual grain here so figured I might as well splurge a little. Also wait till I get a nice front rest and rear bag to shoot it. Probably gonna be another month or two

Doesn't the wood stock have a cheekpiece? Put it back on and go shooting.

Yeah that might work or like Ed says put the wood back on and shoot it.
I encourage you to give the gun a chance before altering it. Those things are high end Japanese craftsmanship.

That wood stock has a lot higher cheek piece being a Monte Carlo style, you can see it in the pic of them together. Maybe move the scope forward more and try the wood stock. grin

I don't think you'll like it. You love tweeking rifles so much, and this one is darn-near perfect as is . Probably ought to send it down the road. If you keep it, you might as well sell most everything else you've got, you'll be forever disappointed in them. I see heartaches ahead.

I agree, Sir Ken.

It is like altering a Katana.

Well, he always gets plenty of sound advice....

The ONLY thing I did to my Weatherby , was to have a different recoil pad put onto it. It in no way changed the gun in any other way, and that pad was better, softer rubber, and the main point, was black , which now matches perfectly with my Leupold scope and other black bling.

A lightning bolt in hand, I call it.

Perfection should not be fiddled with, but appreciated the way it is.

As I said this is going against my usual grain . Though I prefer to tweak I do have a love for good guns. I actually have a few that i never really modded or tweaked. Either I just bedded or added a check rest and that just it. They all have round load and put aside and I know if it comes down to me making a shot I can pick any of them and just get to work. Their on the wall for the most part though. No need to mess with them because they just plain work.

Still to low lol. I swear this is the same deal with 70% of the rifles ive messed with. How it makes me shoot with us basically a chin weld

Vs how I would prefer to shoot it with a good cheek weld
