I finally found my first REAL Morel and just as I saw it that’s when the mower blade turned it into mush. That’s right, I was cutting grass and being careful to not hit any stumps and just as the deck came up to the mushroom that’s when it clicked that that was indeed a massive morel the size of a football, ok a mini football and there was no going back.
I stopped driving and just sat there like Son of a gun man!! I know that was a Morel!! Arghhhh!! I looked around for more from the seat, but didn’t spot any.
Really?? A Morel growing here on my yard!?!? In sand with only pine trees around?

I kept cutting grass and then I saw another one!! Woot woot! This one didn’t get run over. I ended up finding 8 good ones and 2 that were old and rotten.

I didn’t know they would grow in pure sand around pine trees. You pro’s find them in sand around your area?

They were all in an open area where the sun could beat down on them all day. Is that where they grow, in direct sunlight?









I should have taken a pic of the area to show you guys what it looked like. Mostly only pine needles and pine cones on the ground where I found them. The one I ran over was on the edge of grass and bush.

We find them in sand quote often. In the trees and wide open places. You never know where they might pop up.

Used to find them on a sand bar as a kid, lots of times there would be several in one clump, not hard to see.

Finely after some water comes they will pop, 2 years of drought has put them in suspension

Best mushrooms I’ve ever had! Way better than chanterelles. Morel’s look ugly, but taste good!
Now I know what the craze is all about with these things. Thinking about taking the day off tomorrow and looking for more!

Find them in sand every year underneath the cottonwood trees by the shores of lake Erie and the mouths of the creeks. Some are quite hard to wash all the sand out of though if on a windy bank location

There are more common places where they are expected to grow.
However, morels grow where you find them.
One year a nice sized trio grew in the open mulch across the sidewalk from the main door. I probably walked by them 50 times. When I finally noticed them they were dry and starting to decay. I claim that they snuck in just to tease me.

Great find, Jurassic Park. I'm fairly certain that morel season is over in my neighborhood.

yes some of my best spot are sandy pine trees area

Here if they're in sand along th crick.or river....it's been my experience that no amount of soaking gets the sand out and that there gritty when you try to eat them

I think I’m on a roll!! Was out bear baiting and there were Morel’s everywhere. Hundreds of them. I couldn’t pick them all up.

Grabbed a few hand fulls and had to get going. Didn’t have a bag or container to put them in.

You can split them lengthwise and dry them on a screen and they will keep almost indefinitely. DO NOT WASH them if you plan to dry them. We keep them in small paper bags. Rehydrate and rinse whenever you want to use them.

"Hen of the woods" is the best much cleaner and way less bugs
