original Sevin formula used to drop them in their tracks.

A couple years ago, I tried the milky spore, hoping for a long term solution. apparently, I'd have to plant that stuff in my neighbor's yard, his neighbor's yard and HIS neighbor's yard to do any good.

I use Tempo. Won't harm pets or people but will kill good bugs just as easily as the bad ones.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Not sure why I mention it, but I sprayed yesterday with an Ortho product that uses acemitaprid as the active ingredient. That is a mild synthetic nicotine and is toxic to most bugs that eat it. It gets absorbed into the leaf and becomes systemic. As of yesterday, they were thick. As of today, what few there are are lethargic, sick and dropping off the apple trees. One treatment lasts a couple weeks and doesn't wash off in the rain. Bad news is Ortho took it off the market a couple years back. Concern about bees or some such thing.

Beyond that, about 5 years ago, we went from none to hoards of them to not near as many past 2 years. Plague lasted 3 or 4 years, then began dying out. That seems to have repeated itself as they spread out across the country. My guess is it revolves around that milky spore stuff used to treat the ground for them. When they first arrive, there is none in the ground. Over time, it may naturally catch up to them and work to thin them out as a natural control. Whatever the case, there are not even 1/10th this year compared to 5 or 6 years back.

Traps will attract them, and you could catch a dumpster full, but not near as many as there are. Best use for traps, might be if one lived next to a flowing stream. One where fish can come and go and the bugs get flushed out to feed the fish downstream. A stream big enough to handle a lot of fish. Do not make mistake of doing it on a farm pond or lake. Heard of one guy who did and he got them easy enough.....but then they formed large rolling balls.....until they died, then spread out over the water in a raft of nasty dead, smelly bugs.......blowing back and forth on the pond for weeks. Fish ate as many as they could but not near enough fish to clear the bugs.

I set out a trap. Seems to be working. A couple are on the raspberries still, but most fly into the trap hanging on a bush.

I spray my grapes and apples with Sevin and it works fine. I agree with white marlin that the old formula Sevin worked better

You can take a carboy and a big funnel, put the trap crosspiece with the bait in it in the funnel and place it away from where you don't want the beetles. They will go to the bait just the same as if it was on the collecting bag, but will fall into the carboy instead. As it rains, it will make a horrible mess inside. At the end of the year, dig a trench and pour the nastiness into the garden and get your nutrients back.

Back when they were running hot, we'd set 5 or 6 traps on 5 gallon buckets. Fill one bucket per day per trap. For 2 or 3 weeks in a row. Never made a dent in them.

We had the best luck protecting what we wanted to protect with spray, and let them have the rest. They started to fizzle out after that.

We sprayed ours with tempo

I was also told not to use those traps because the stuff that’s in them can attract these beetles from over a mile away, maybe that’s not true. But if I get any traps I plan to hang them on one end of my farm opposite of our fruit trees and garden
