God gives us a command in that verse. The test, to me in this context, is obey God and he will fulfill His promise. That helps build your faith the He will do as He said. It is a covenant relationship.

Testing God by daring Him to do something, such as throwing yourself off a building and demanding He save you, is an act of arrogance. You are trying to place God at your beck and call. That is sin.

I think you have a point there. It's the same thing Jesus said, if you cast your bread on the waters it'll come back and as you give it will be given to you, even to overflowing.
And this is something certain denominations emphasize and others try to explain away.

Do you tithe on the net or the gross? Do you want a blessing based on the net or the gross? Heard a pastor say that and thought it was pretty good. I tithe on the net and usually ballpark it to the nearest $100. God keeps providing.

I’m gonna share the story regardless of mocking and ridicule that may follow.

There are some good points made about tithing and where the heart is however I don’t believe that is an initial concern as much as it is after experiencing some spiritual growth.

Shortly after we returned to the church, tithing was weighing on us. We were making a modest living but we were cutting it close with the finances. Not above ours means but right at, if you know what I mean.
We were doing pretty good when it became apparent we were going to have to make a choice. Tithe or have money to get through the next couple weeks.
We decided to tithe. Part of that decision was the safety net of a gig scheduled for the weekend in between that would put enough cash on the table for the weekly grind. Hindsight, that’s not really putting much faith in God for providing and He showed us that.
The gig weekend came and a storm caused it to be canceled. Uh oh. What now?
We continued on like it didn’t matter and it didn’t. No bills in the mail, there was plenty to eat and a car I drove for 4 years that got 25mpg, got 37mpg that week. Everybody knows I’m crazy but this was even crazier than me.

Funny you should mention mocking. I kind of took some of ur responses as mocking at our posts. Seems a little like that's what u had planned with the open invite for discussion then u share the story afterwards. Kind of seemed like I'll set u up so I can shoot u down thing.

Actually, I figured most that would reply had been present during a sermon regarding the only time God request that we test him. I did not realize until PA pointed it out the some denominations sweep that under the rug.

I should have been aware that such a question would draw the theologians and self righteous.

Mocking? Ridicule? Not sure why you expect that. You obeyed God, and He did what He said He would.
