Hey all, I was planning on going to NTA this weekend to try and get enough traps and lures/etc to get myself started for my first year, but due to financial reasons I’m not going to be able to make it… what other ways do you all know of to get started as cheap (er, ish.) as possible without going to nta?

what do you plan to trap , how much ground do you have , how much time do you have ???
that will be the guide to what you need.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Try Craig’s list as well as Facebook market place you can often find good deals just know what stuff is really worth, you can also put a free add in them looking for the stuff you want, might contact you state association and see if they have any district meetings scheduled they often have members selling stuff, if your state association has a news letter you might think about putting an add looking for what you want in it

Don’t get caught up in all the gizmos and gadgets and things. Don’t think you gotta have the strongest, top of the line traps. Here’s what you NEED to start land trapping:
Traps. Not fancy, expensive traps. I started out with stock dukes and they work just fine if you tune em a bit.
Stakes. You can make your own out of rebar, or buy super stakes or wolf fangs. The downside to the super stakes/etc is you have to buy the driver too, but they’re not too expensive.
Pan covers or underalls, depending on which you plan to use. I like pan covers. Both are super cheap.
Bait. It seems expensive when you’re looking at it, but if you’re running a dozen sets a 16 ounce jar will go a long ways.
Wax. It’s cheap for as long as it’ll last. Ten pounds will do A LOT of traps.
Hammer. Any old sledge hammer will do.
Trowel. Any trowel. I use a cheap garden shovel from Walmart
Bucket to carry gear, separate bag for bait/lure.
Some of it you can make, some of it you might have laying around, some you’ll have to buy. So what is your budget?

Check your private messages. I can help with some bargain equipment, but you would be best advised to rely on other members as to how best to utilize it.

Right now, there are plenty of guys that geared up to take advantage of the last fur boom ( me included) . I would rather pass some of that along to someone who might see the next boom than to let my heirs sell my traps for scrap when I am gone .

that will be the guide to what you need. This is the question you have to answer first. Check out F&T and Minnesota trapline products they have several starter kits that are reasonably priced that will get you started.

Thank you for the response, and thank everyone else for theirs as well. I’m sorry it took me so long to reply, I forgot my password and just managed to remember it out of the blue! I’m going to make a separate post to ask, but I believe I’m going to try snaring on the few private spots I have, as I think snares are about all I’ll be able to afford to do. What’s the “frugal” way to make snares?

Buy the snares that are legal in your state amd but a roll of cable and some ferrules and you can reuse most of the parts and you have an example of where and how every piece goes together
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.
