I have been trying too remove a woodchuck from our property later this week set 160 and a 1 way door trap. I then was asked to remove a woodchuck there also after is ran at her. I used a covered trap and cantaloupe nothing touched except for the the 160 that was tripped multiple times. When the neighbor lady told me about it she also told me the other neighbor had one also. I checked all the holes the woodchucks had dug but no positively active sign there’s anything there.

Please help

Snare.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

snare the hole with a very short snare. They will run back down the hole once caught and if they get very far, you might not be able to pull them out.

I'm no expert
I have found that if using cage traps .
I try to make sure the bottom of the cage is covered with sand. ( from the hole if possible)
It seems like they may be less hesitant to enter the cage trap if not walking on the wire on the bottom.
I also have better luck if fencing at the entrance is used to guide them from the hole.
Baiting seems hard to do.
Over ripe muskmelons , bananas , ect. are talked about a lot.
Hardest one to catch was finally caught using little white powdered doughnuts.
Probably the vanilla scent , I thought.
But I had him the next day.

Burying two or three short chained footholds at the entrance, is effective for me if possible.
Short chains to keep them near the top end of the hole.
Conibears I'm very selective with , non target is my concerns where I'm located.

No pro
Not an expert
But friends call me often.

When you say you’re using a 160... are you setting it at the exit of a den/burrow?

If so, make sure to either make the hole slightly larger than the Trap’s jaws or stabilize the trap 6-7” from the hole in such a way or with added blocking to prevent anything from being able to exit without firing the trap. You want the trap to be able to fire and close without striking the soil, because it can cause the trap to push off and away from the animal as it leaves the hole.

I’ve never trapped woodchucks, but this same method applies to all bodygrips set close to holes from mink to beaver.

Good luck

dig and indentation at the edge of the burrow, set a 2.5 foothold, do not give it enough chain to get down the hole. they are easy to trap.

Place some apple or watermelon flavored bubble gum where it will find it. Give it the whole pack. End of problem.

I get them with a 160 with a trip pan instead of the wires, set in a hole under a fence or shed or the hole, like said make sure it'll fire without hitting the dirt.
A foothold in their run, or close to the hole works too.
Had no luck with box traps
