Opening day 2022 Steese Highway caribou hunt had just a few vehicles 760 and the caribou had moved to the upper Salcha area. Air boat or airplane is the only access!
Not unusual for Salcha boat ramp to have over 100 vehicles. Everyone running for the upper river and I had the lower river almost to myself. Farther better LOL.

The land ownership along the Denali highway is mixed up. On the Paxson end there are about five miles that are closed along the Gulkana drainage. Further west, but on the south side of the road is a lot of federal preserve type land. On the north side is the Tangles Lakes Archeological Areas.
Along that whole corridor mechanized travel is pretty much restricted to established trails. Most hunters you passed were likely far off the road. We should have taken our shotguns. While a buddy of mine decked the only bull we saw, the waterfowl numbers were incredible. I've never seen so many ducks in my life.

So I’m a 21 year old guy that’s always wanted to move to Alaska but never thought I would. The past week or so I started thinking why not. I guess my problem is I just don’t know enough about what it’s like up there. I’ve boiled it down to a couple question for those that have experience there.
What would be the best area to move to? I’m sure everyone has their own opinions but a little guidance would be great. A little research I did pointed me towards Anchorage but I’m by no means set on it. What are pros and cons to other areas?
Secondly, what hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities are available? Here in NY I’m used to being able to during fall walk out my back door and hunt white tails any time I want to. Or I could take a boat to a few different lakes within a half hours drive and go fishing. It seems like from what I read online that the outdoorsman’s opportunities are great there but are more like taking a weekend or week off and making a trip by boat or plane to very remote areas. It seems like these trips could be a pain and expensive and I end up spending less time in the woods. I guess it boils down to just asking what opportunities are available?
Any input or guidance guys and gals have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Well a lot of good advice here. At 21 your still probably not sure of your future and coming up here is a big decision. I don’t know if your experiencing the deep urge for change. I can offer this! We have everything here everyone else have in other parts of our country EXCEPT IMO more freedom. Yah a lot of people hunt fish and trap but Alaska is huge. In my over 50 years I have found that one thing is common. It all requires WORK! Willingness to work opportunity is here. We need the next generation of outdoors individuals to keep the flame alive!

Sounds like just the type we need here I’m still following, I’ve just come to the realization that if I’m going to go I need to sooner than later. I’ll ask more questions as I come up with them. I’d love to make a trip up this fall but I’d have to see if I can swing the expense of a plane ticket and find out what I should do and see while I’m up there. If I made a trip up, what do you guys think I should do to see what Alaska’s all about?

Like martentrapper said. Anybody can move up here and make it on the road system of Alaska. That is the civilized part. Just come up and get a job and observe what goes on for awhile. Takes money and toys to access the more remote areas of Alaska and things are much different than civilization when and if you move to a remote village and even worse if you move to a remote place where you have to provide all your own utilities and know how. Better to do when you are 21 than 60 like the current crop of retirees doing it.
