Looks fine to me, can't tell till you shoot something, speaking as an amateur of course.

No, you will only find pieces if your have too much velocity. The bullet will literally explode in the air, it's ripping itself apart when it happens. Look fine to me.

Shoot a big hog in the ham, preferably an already dead one. You will likely see different results.

Bulets that blow up like that, will lack penetration.

Better be a wide open area where you can see or an anchoring shot. Bullets like that don’t leave an exit if they even penetrate enough. On a coyote I’d think they’d probably be ok, but if they run I doubt you’ll find them. I want all my bullets leaving me something to follow if they don’t drop.

a 45gr soft point Hornady bullet that didn't do that would be more of a surprise

the only .224 bullet Hornady makes that isn't varmint or target is a all copper that is new. that is a very old box of bullets in the picture.

I expect if you can slip it between the ribs on a hog or put it in the neck you will kill them just fine

the 55gr through the ribs on a deer almost made it out the other side , it will take out the lungs and make organ jelly , it definitely comes apart and dumps all the energy , just don't expect an exit.

if you need an exit hornady soft point .224 isn't the bullet to use

That’s one of the reasons I quit using Hornady SST’s. I call them Western bullets. They kill just fine as long as you can watch them run and drop. If you don’t you aren’t finding any blood to help track, but when you stumble on the deer it will be dead.

Try not to take shots that won't end with a DOA honestly. Hate tracking and meat always seems to be better when they drop in their tracks. At least that's what it seems like with hogs

I have never shot a pig that didn't involve near press contact
but that should work it may not come out the other side but it should drop them.

What I find funny is I can shoot a hog with any bullet out of any gun and they drop. I’ve shot the dang things dead center so I wouldn’t have to drag them off and they drop. I really don’t care if I find a pig or not, just want holes in them so they die.
Deer on the other hand can be a perfect heart shot with a rifle and they still run 100+ yards. With a bow I watch them drop within feet to maybe 50 yards.

What are those cartridges in the block, .223? Don't look like Hornet brass. I bet they do shoot good. The whole line of Hornady .224 bullets shoot good and accurate.
BUT, you may be driving them too fast. Or, is that what you want. Those little 45 grainers Hornet bullets do their thang at around 2100fps or so. Your .223 is probably going 1000fps above that. Be like a bomb cranking at 3100 or 3200 fps. I'd be afraid if I smacked a hog or coyote with one of those little pills going that fast it might blow up without penetrating. Do some research on the 52 or 53 grain Sierra or Hornady Match King for hog or coyote.

.223 honestly the only reason I'm shooting these things is my picky H&R seems to love em. Was trying a few others and was getting 1.5" max I mean consistently but not what I was happy with. Got kinda fed up and just pulled a YOLO. Had a few of th see old boxes I bought in a bundle for the hornet and figured why not. The Hornady book had a load for TAC so made like three test loads and on the second I got this confused

Honestly from every thing I read about .22 hornet bullets I had expected them to just over stabilize and explode before they hit the target but welllll

Wow! Who would have guessed that a frangile Hornet bullet would shoot that well out of the 223. I have an application that requires explosive expansion. I'll have to try a box.
