Maybe it is throwing corn when the deer are near by, when one of them things go off in the woods it's pretty loud. It will make you jump when you are hunting. It does the same to the deer.

Haha, I was wondering when someone else was gonna say WHAT?? I’m too cheap to buy corn this year. Got a trailer full of peanuts I’m putting out. Heck, been using peanuts in my DP’s catching coons and possums. About the only thing ants don’t eat.

Although deer will eat corn, it is not the best food for them and they know it. They need a lot of browse to keep the microbes in their gut happy. Corn is not what these microbes want. Corn will fatten deer up, but they need a lot of browse with it to make it work.
When deer are yarded up in high snow, they will starve to death with a full belly if given nothing but corn for an extended period of time.

Yotetrapper30 get you some powdered molasses or some sweet feed and mix into your corn, this will give it more of an odor plus a sweet taste and this will get the deer started on it quicker. Once they start you can stop with the molasses or sweet feed if you want to and just use corn as they will be used to the free meal by then.

What’s your deer density in the area. Here it’s got to be close to 40 or more. I just went and stuck out a camera in the wide open pines at 1942 and got the first pic at 2037. A tad less than an hour and deer are on some pears and a few scattered peanuts.

Not sure. Newest data I could find online was from 2009! Said 35+ then, but that was a long time ago. It does seem to be less deer this year than most years.

1) takes them time to find the food source
2) there are plenty of things growing in the wild that they can eat that are better for them and they prefer over corn
3) if you have hogs they will find it before the deer and take over

Our deer like to snack on corn year round here if it is available the same with bird seed. They really like that or sunflower seeds.

They don't like the sweet feed here the couple times I put a scoup or two out but the coon do. Not sure why. Put the corn out and its gone pretty quick. Put out the molasses mix and it swells up with the rain and the birds and turkey eat it.

There is some conditioning involved no doubt. Then once they find it they will keep visiting.

Mix some liquid molasses into some of the corn, put it right on the ground. The deer will find it pretty quick, once they're hooked, and it'll just take a few days, switch to plain corn... They may not stay and eat like they're at a Golden Corrals buffet but they'll pass through every night to grab a few bites before moving on.

Standing corn, beans; alfalfa and high quality natural browse everywhere might be the difference here

Anyone else notice how deer are finicky and highly selective of what natural food they eat and won't eat as the season progresses?
For instance, they seem to know what the shelf life of specific food sources are and select them over what I would think would be their favorite.

They FINALLY showed up about a week ago. I was fixing to move the feeder. Took them long enough. Multiple does there all the time but no bucks yet. I don't care, can't eat antlers anyways.

I have put peanuts and hunted this evening and only 3 deer went to the peanuts, the other 15 or so fed on acorns, privet, and beauty berry.

Muscadines are starting to get ripe though.

You going to make jelly? I love that stuff

I didn't. For some reason, the wild ones are few and far between. Would take awhile to pick enough. I'll see if there's still any left, probably all gone by now though.

I laugh every time I see one of those type feeders or ground feeders. In these parts the bear would destroy it in hours.
