I fished on lake superior for 5 years and saw 50 plus pound white fish with 6 in smelt in them they were some of the hardest and strongest fish to get out of the nets we had a cut off axe handle to kill them.

Lake White fish are still speared through the ice in the winter in the bays around Sault Ste. Marie. Most hard core whitefish fisherman use elbow macaroni feed beds to draw them in. Hook and line fisherman catch them on maccaroni, waxworms, spawn, and mayflys during the hatch.

the key to white fish is chumming we use corn or fish eggs , we take a one pound coffee can and made a trip door on bottom, lower the can to the bottom of the lake and open trip door , then put bait on single hook, with a small split shot about 18 inches up line
