I know most on here know this already, but thought you might like the video. Something new I'm trying on the channel called "Nature Notes" that are shorter 1-2 minute videos (Horizontal format - I am not a fan of the vertical format shorts or tik tok style stuff). Planning on doing a longer format video and a Nature Note every week.
I've been asked more times than I can count if a box elder is poison ivy so I decided to make a video about it. Tried a few new things in this one. Let me know how you like it!

Turtledale: Most of the maples can be used to make syrup, some better than others. Box elder makes good syrup but it takes more sap to make the same amount of syrup that sugar maple would make. Someone had posted on one of my other video posts that they make box elder syrup. Here in KY I think most of the trees that get tapped for syrup, at least in my area, are red maples.
It can be bad when it is in the wrong place, but it is actually a good wildlife plant. Deer actually eat it. Most animals are immune to the rash causing oils.

There is a special Round-up for Poison Ivy that goes to the roots because the patches can be 100 m square
Many an archaeologist has dug where it is present and sat on the roots, that gets into their clothing and comes through , the roots when troweled leek sap which gets on everything including cultural material = only to raise a ugly head in the lab when handling
Ruffed Grouse cue into the white berries once all the leaves have fallen; making handling crops tricky when cleaning

Thought I found one those look a likes. Yesterday dropping pines, I noticed blue berries in the crown. Looked closer today, 5 leaves not 3. Still I expect rash in my future. The ivy hides in with the creeper.
Yellow cap round up. Thanks, revenge is mine lol. Will the yellow cap round up hurt the trees? Or should I use something other?

The "Yellow Cap" roundup is nothing more than a mix of glyphosate and triclopyr. You would have the same results using generic triclopyr 3 without any glyphosate in the mix. And yes, it will harm trees - triclopyr is used to control broadleaf weeds and woody plants. When I apply triclopyr 3 I usually use it in combo with imazapyr and use it solely as a cut stump treatment. Very effective and it only goes where I need it to.
