With the cost to feed these girls and fuel, I’m surprised milk isn’t any higher in the stores

I have no problem if people want to drink milk as adults. Just don't think its a plain drink, like water, because its not, its a liquid food. I rather take in calories and protein by putting that nearly 6 bucks towards some good red meat on sale. No way a glass of milk tastes as good as well handled medium rare good steak...

I do use ketchup. I don’t add anything to it, it’s affordable

Depending upon region, components and other premiums, dairy farmers are getting about $23-$27 dper CWT for their milk. At 8.6 lbs. per gallon there is about 11 gallons of milk in a CWT, plus the fat or cream taken off to reduce the fat in the milk to either 0 or up to 3.2 or 3.4 for fluid milk. Those places selling milk for $ 2 per gallon or even under $3 are using milk as a loss leader to get the shoppers down the aisles. With that being said and at say $3.75 for whole milk there is well over $40 of retail sales in a CWT of milk, so the bottling, shipping, stocking and selling costs just about double the cost of a CWT of milk and that is the product with the least production and handling costs. The feed cost price ratio which is used to determine base profit in the dairy industry is not real favorable with the high cost of inputs. Yes the farmers are handling signifciant quantities of cash but margins are slim as in most agriculture production venture, not much different than fur.

I remember when milk was going for $12-15 per cwt 10-15 years ago so it just shows how badly our currency has been eroded if it now takes $23-27 to be living on the edge of margin...

I remember that too, but at that time they weren't on the edge of margins. They were below cost of production. All the guys I know were getting operating expense loans every month to cover what they were short. At that point it's a waiting game just hoping you can hold out long enough for prices to come back.

If we did are milk the way they do in Europe it would solve a lot of problems in production and cost.
