I occasional hear the southern variety at night here where I live. There are more around here than people think. I'll go outside at night and will occasionally hear one chirping nearby. When I had chickens, the flyers would occaionally get in the pellet feeder and gorge themselves to death eating too many pellets.

It's ever interesting to me the circuitous route these threads take and where they end up. That this flying squirrel thread went to parasites is oh-so logical I guess?

Think how boring this website would be if we didn't go the logical progressions. It'd be like farcebook!

Some of these flying squirrels look HUGE compared to the ones I'm used to seeing. Must be a different type.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

There are two distinct species of flying squirrel in North America. The northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) has at least 25 subspecies and their range extends down the Apalachians into the Carolina's. The southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) occurs just in the east with ten different subspecies, but even in Minnesota and into Maine; considerable overlap in the ranges of the two species. Generally, the northern flying squirrel is much bigger than the southern. Clear as mud?

Yotetrapper, it looks like Miss. only has the smaller version, the southern flying squirrel.

I thought those flyers had that southern bell accent when they land too hard on the tree trunks
