Looks like a hole or 3 , them shoulder bones don't punch through well on elk
Back in the day with slower bows and fat aluminum arrows that shoulder bone was an elk hunters worst nightmare Still is, these new fast bows will blow through a shoulder sometimes, but at least 8 out of 10 shoulder shots will stop dead or bounce off. As an elk guide the shoulder is NOT my worst nightmare, it is the guys holding off the shoulder and hitting the guts. If they front shoulder it and it doesn't penetrate the elk will live, if they hold off the shoulder and hit it in the guts it is a dead elk, but chances of finding it aren't great. Unlike a gut shot with a rifle, bow gut shot animals seldom get another arrow put in them, and they don't bleed much so they are tough to track. Elk are a tough animal, they may live for several days gut shot, but you hit them in the guts and they are a dead elk. The other common badly placed shot is what we call "armpitting" them, the arrow tucked tight behind the shoulder on a quartering away shot. The arrow will slide up the ribs between them and the shoulder blade and not hit anything vital. You aren't getting that elk, whether it survives or not is a crapshoot though, our archery elk season is in September, I've found a freshly dead bull in December that was armpitted and just finally succumbed. If the arrow stays in there that broadhead is working and cutting every time the elk moves.

Applying to the elk lottery is a money maker for KY, with little chance of drawing a tag , especially for Non residents. BUT, If you have enough money or are a celebrity , it’s no problem getting a KY elk tag. The company I use to consult for received around 7 KY elk tags per year, if you have $7000 - $10,000 you can have one. Yes it is luck of the draw. For every 5,000 acres they donate to be an RA they get an any season tag that can do whatever with.

My great grandparents came from Rose Hill. There’s elk in that area of Cumberland Gap. We hunted Martin and Floyd county. He killed it in Martin.

Actually all 3 holes
We’re pass through. Shot it at a bad angle and went right through the Liver. Didn’t go very far and ended up shooting it 2 more times with a Raven crossbow.

Congrats on the elk . Did you guys pay a guide?
As for shooting it 3 times You guys ever watch a elk hunting TV show. Elk are stupid . They hunt them like cows over here in Ky . Come to the same flat spot to feed every day . You shoot one and they just stand there like a drugged up cow. Heck I think a cow would run farther ... Yes I know some run off but from watching videos they just hump up and take a few steps... Put another shot in them . His pic is perfect example. You get 3 shots on an animal with a crossbow. It was lacking the flee gene or something.
