I have seen garter snakes, Northern water snakes and black rat snakes do that. The black rats I saw doing it were hanging down from the lattice in the ceiling of a pigeon loft, like those snakes are dangling down. Keith

But the time they reach about 6' they are done with climbing. My guess is that at that point they are after larger prey and that is found on the ground. Mine used to climb the tree in the garden in front of the house till they got to that size and then quit and stuck to the grass. They did not like gravel either in the heat of the day.
