Careful, since this is a lower court the ruling only applies in that courts jurisdiction. However, as precedent other courts could concur should similar cases be brought before them, could not would.

Higher courts will need to concur as well for this to become widespread. But it is just one more chunk in the wall that seems to be slowly but surely torn down.

guns didn't require a serial number untill 1968 so a LOT have no serial number

it could easily still rule that a gun that had a serial number that is intentionally damaged or altered is a crime should you try and sell it or transfer it.

however I suspect this is in rebuttal to the new Mandate that any gun spending a night at any FFL must be serialized

so say you had a 22 rifle built before 1968 it was very common for them to not have serial numbers , you take it to have the firing pin replaced and your gun smith would be required to give it a serial number

I can see were a court could rule defacing your own piece of property does not a felony make

there were also some attempts to charge/convict people who cerocoated a gun over the SN# for altering saying that it made it less able to be read and this could be in response to that


Please please could a court rule that a pistol with a stock poses no greater danger that than a pistol with out a stock thus killing GCA 1934 on SBRs and SBS
