A mature doe was standing out in a small lily pad covered pond. I approached her to within 50 yds and she squatted/lay down with only her head up as I got close. When I turned to leave she jumped up and leaped out of the water and onto land. She looked back and me then walked on into timber....appeared to be healthy.

I first thought she may have EHD/blue tongue, but she may have thought she was hiding.

There were fresh coyote tracks on pond dam so they may have had something to do with that. This was at 1 PM.

Awesome pictures, especially the one with just her head above water, thanks for posting.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

Was she eating? Never seen one wade out to eat though it wouldn't surprise me. The one I found in a creek was down but not out and we had trailed to the creek where it tried laying low on us.

I've seen cows wade out into sloughs off the Alabama River to munch on water hyacinth.

I didn't see her browsing b4 she seen me....but I have seen deer wade and browse aquatic vegetation b4.

This property has very little hunting pressure and a high deer population. I'm there trapping coyotes...pay job. Been seeing dozens of deer each day...including some nice bucks. Had one very large 8 pt jump fence into road in front of me and then stop and stare. 18" to 20" spread...heavy mass, long tines. Property is piney woods cattle pastures.

She's an older doe and is a bit rangy looking but she still had some strength...so it might not be EHD.

Very interesting. I have never seen that before with a whitetail I have seen Moose in that deep. No doubt she may have been taking refuge.

Thanks for sharing. When you think you have heard and seen most everything this happens. Thermal relief or insect relief?

Nice picture swamp wolf, I've seen turkeys try to duck and hide and as danger passed they were up and going.

I have seen white-tails dunk their heads completely in the lake to feed on submerged vegetation just like a moose.

Jumped a doe that was hiding behind a log in a timber duck hole once.

In our heat I wonder why we don't see them hanging out in the water more.

Looks a lot like an EHD victim, saw many last year out in the ponds and streams ..
Only to find them dead the next day ...
Devastating disease. I hope not ...

only the head is above water
