My 15 yo Brittany has a mass growing on her left flank. I had the vet biopsy it and it came back sarcoma. From what I've read it seems it can be treated if not too invasive. Anyone deal with a sarcoma and your dog. She's otherwise healthy. Good appetite etc.

No, can't say that I have or know of any that have. In my circles a dog is either healthy and doing it's job or not.

I would be curious if that is a genetic thing.

Quite common in dogs, consider the age of the dog hope you got the best years out of the dog. Neighbors dog the tumor grew to the size of a basket ball and he was a medical doctor and let it ride for a year as it grew.
Do what is best for your dog and your attachment to it.

Get advice from a couple different vets….if you know any breeders get their take….it will come down to the quality of life for the pooch and the reality you may have to face…Good Luck

My lab is also dealing with some sort of tumor on his right elbow. Had it checked out a few years ago at the University of Georgia vet. Came back as a mineralized hygroma. It eventually reduced its size for a few years, but now it's back and it's huge. Dog is having trouble walking.

Going to the vet today to run some more tests to see what we're dealing with. Very stressful time.

I have been reading that depending on tumor size, there is something they can inject to kill a cancerous tumor. Is/was that an option for your dog?

I hope everything goes well for you and your dog!

15 years old is a great life for a dog. I say dont treat it, keep her going, and get a new pup.

Tough answer to hear, but probably the best advice.

it's is like sending your 98 year old grandmother for surgery so she can live 1 more year 10 months of it in recovery

it's sad but if the dog isn't pain now enjoy the time you have left , feed well and time will keep marching on no matter what.

none of us get out of this alive time takes us all.

put down my 14 year old German shepherd this last fall , she acted like a puppy at times till nearly her final days

I don't see the point to dumping lots of money at something not currently causing pain when the patient is in their final year or two.

Love them while you can. Cody and I took our last wood walk this morning, tail wagged, and he smiled the whole way. He has an appointment this afternoon to see the rainbow bridge, Inoperable tumor in his nasal passage. Labs are sure heart breakers.

I had to put down my favorite American Water Spaniel a few years back. I suspect she had something similar. The vet said it was a cancerous tumor. I had trouble putting her down and kept her going as long as I could until it spread to her lungs. Annie was 12.

As an American I'm growing tired of our ancestors being compared to the migrants of today.

My German shepherds 7. She has developed a knot just above her shoulder blades. It was soft at first and has become hard. Wife said the vet was not concerned.

Since she has developed a larger knot under one of Her nipples. I'm concerned she had cancer. She does not leave the area close to the house and has not for a while. She seems stiff and does not seem to move very quickly when she gets up. She seen to be uncomfortable at times but gets around well, loves food, and still keeps watch very well.

I talked about taking her to the vet to the wife and her and my 20 year old daughter(she is my daughters dog) both think there is likely nothing to be gained and will be a wast of money. Funny since I'm the one suggesting it and the one paying.
So we will just keep watch on her make her happy and when it's time I will have to put her down when she is outside.
Seems to young for her to be having these problems I figured I would have her 10 to 14 years but now 8 and a half may be pushing it.

The thing to ask is what will your dog's quality of life be and how much time will it buy her. The same questions I asked my moms oncologist. Then make your decision.

Providence Farm our vet started giving us the GSD don't last much past 10 talk at 10 getting us ready when she went in for her 14 year appointment the vet said you don't have a GSD you have a *** Unicorn
likely she was a GSD and something mix although looked the part of GSD , I have an acquaintance that is a vet he says the mutts almost always live longer and are frequently healthier than pure bred.

I read an article this morning that said small dogs live longer than bigger dogs. That seems to be true. For years I had Water Spaniels. I don't think any of them lived longer than 12 years. I just had to put down one of our Shih Tzus that was almost 15.

I'm sorry to hear that. My GSD is about 2.5 years old and I'm already dreading that awful day. I tell myself I'll be a man and handle it myself... But that's a tough row to hoe. He is, hands down, the best dog I've ever had.

Thank you all for your responses. I guess I will just wait and see what the surgeon says and take it from there.

Mine lived 13yrs before the inevitable. Haven’t got another working dog since his passing. Was asked to go in on a tracking dog and couldn’t do it. Told them I’d go out and help, but wanted no part of the dog or training. I had my once in a lifetime Dawg, and just can’t do it again. Still think about that Dawg to this day. Seen a few that remind me of him, but none will ever BE him.
At least we have the capability of ending their suffering in an extremely humane way. It’s a hard choice, but when it time you’ll know it has to be done.
