When I started deer hunting in the late 80s a lot of farmers let 3 or 4 different guys hunt there places or at least the places i could get permission to hunt as a high school aged kid. Deer where surprisingly good a patterning hunters in our limited type of habitat here in Central Ks. And a lot fewer deer then. If you wanted to be a better than average hunter you really had to be a thinker. Unfortunately I was a slower learner.

All routes and pre planned based in the wind even it means walking an extra few hundred yards.

With that said, just like for trapping, this is a working area. Deer are used to tractors and my truck. Deer are used to human scent to an extent. There’s not a spot I can climb out here on 2500ac and not have deer walk within bow range.

I thought that would be harder than it was.

This one laid down 30 yards away. I climbed down and went the other direction and she never moved.

I don't do pics. But I got In my blind at 5:05 . At 5:15 I shot a basket rack 6 pointer. There was a second buck behind him but brown Is down.
He's now hanging In the shed. Might have a small rack but he's a big bodied deer. He will make good burger.

Dad and I always enjoyed the guys going out in the dark to be in their stands at first light. They would be out stumbling around in the dark on the way to their stands, straining to see anything that moved, getting cold at they say there in the coldest part of the morning .
We'd go out about 7 or so, get to our stand, and settled in with time for the woods to settle down following our entrance. Yup, we moved a few deer going in, but that was all good. Them early risers were good friends, so moving deer into their area was all go. Come 8:30-9:00 the roles where reversed, they would be cold, get up to move around and get warm, and they would move deer back toward us. Worked out to everyone's advantage.

Looking back, most of my deer harvested where between 9:00 - 11:30 and then in the afternoon 3:00 - close of the day.
