I have several of those gazateer topo maps for different states. they are pretty good. need a magnifying glass to read them in detail. i have been in some remote country where the roads on the map are not accurate with the roads on the ground though. topo is pretty good. you know you need to draw your own map when google earth has a line for a road but when you zoom in it isnt there. sometimes the road number on the road sign doesnt match the number on the gazateer but where its at is accurate.

you have to be careful. its common for ranchers to post no trespassing signs on blm and forest. blm maps are pretty accurate. if you can befriend a local cowboy or landowner is the easiest way to get accurate info. get on the right side of one local and often other landowners will be friendlier.

if you cut the lock off an illegally locked blm gate dont expect local LE to be on your side. I have had deputies two different times ask me why I didnt just move on. i have NEVER seen a fine get issued to the guy posting public land as private.

another common tactic in open range counties is to post private no trespassing at gates county roads go through. usually there is a cattle guard but sometimes a gate that has to be opened then closed. some of those roads get little maintenance. not much more than two tracks but still a public right of way. you can not get off the road but you can drive on it in spite of the no trespassing sign.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

I still use all of these.
Topo maps
A magnetic compass.
Plat Books
Aerial Photos from the county map office.
DeLorme Gazetteers.
OnX Elite on my computer, iPad, iPhone.
OnX state with landowner boundary chip in my Garmin Oregon gps.
Garmin Birdseye view on my Garmin InReach with the big display.

These modern maps are fantastic.
I work with OnX for some ideas. They have good people at a good company.
I have used OnX successfully in legal disputes.

Hybrid map on OnX or GoHunt maps will show satellite image overlaid with topo lines. Download maps for your area if you're going to be out of cell service and put your phone on airplane mode. GPS still tracks you and saves your battery life.

Good info sneaky.

Starting in 1987 I archery hunted in W VA Due to changing work schedules ,health reasons, and the changes that have been put in place for the PA deer seasons I have not hunted there since 2015 When we first started hunting there it was mostly a learn as you walk/hunt /scout and look at topo maps .Mapping tech has allowed anyone with a computer to learn your way around while sitting in your house. During the time from 1987 to 2015 the mapping technology improved a thousand times over Now you can study maps of all types and feel like you where just standing on that ridge yesterday .I still use My Topo ,Terra Server and Find my street if I am just trying to grt general infob

What did you like better about Huntstand or dislike about OnX? I've got Huntstand but have never used the others. I've wondered about switching but wasnt sure I'd gain much. The only thing I really use it for is to see the land owner info or the property boundary relative to where the gps has me at. I've seen the boundaries off a number of times and wondered if the others were much better
