Stuffing made from lousy white bread packed into the turkey body cavity and baked to simulate guts has never been appetizing to me. However, dressing made a variety of ways can be a very appetizing dish that I would enjoy throughout the year. The cornbread type dressing is memorably delicious. So is a New England style made including lobster, oysters, or other shellfish. Ditto for another style made with apples, cranberries, and pecans.

Sweet potatoes are delicious when baked in a casserole with tart apples, golden raisins, butter, and brown sugar. Also delicious as someone mentioned whipped with pecans, butter, and brown sugar.

Since just wifey and me, we bake in the oven a bone-in turkey breast and also cook one in the offset firebox Texas bbq. Two methods and we love both. Inject maple real maple syrup and baste with cider makes it extra good.

We are in complete agreement.

X3 and add cranberry sauce to the most hated list.

All that is needed for a great Thanksgiving meal is gravy and some homemade rolls

Do you have a recipe for that? I tried googling it but didn't see one quite like it.

That green bean casserole is one of my favorites especially with the crunchy stuff on top. Maybe yall are having it wrong.

Yote - I invented that one year when we invited wifey’s family for Tgiving dinner. Wanted to jazz up the sweet potatoes. We usually don’t cook from actual recipes, except for some old German recipes for various goodies.

Peel and bake the potatoes until 1/2 to 3/4 done. Or bake then peel. Otherwise the potatoes take forever to get soft, not sure why. Cut into suitable size chunks. Peel and cut up the apples. Melt the real butter, stir in brown sugar, stir in raisins. Put potatoes and apples in a casserole dish that allows stirring. I like higher sides. Put apples and potatoes in the dish. Pour over the rest. Stir occasionally and bake until soft but not mushy. Adjust the quantities to a suitable ratio. Everyone like plenty of the sauce so serve in small bowls. Alternatively, I like it scooped over a couple slices of turkey on a deep sided plate. A little cinnamon and/or nutmeg are optional to suit your taste. We added pecans once but they seemed to not belong.

Not everyone likes golden raisins or dark raisins. In this dish the dark raisins seem to clash with the other flavors. The golden raisins make it all blend and enhance the rest.

I hope you like it!

Pike - Agreed, the green bean casserole is great and so easy to make. 3 ingredients and add heat.

I hate yams (those orange things). I don't know why everyone calls them sweet potatoes.
Sweet potatoes are white and taste like a real rich potato.

I love real cranberry sauce, not that crap that comes in a can and tastes like metal. If people made their own cranberry sauce they would have a completely different opinion I think.

and yet I bet if you surveyed people state wide 3/4 of them probably think cranberries come in a can and aunt **** serves them every year.

if they had real berries done right homemade it would likely be different.

there isn't a food on that map I dislike , just some people don't often do well like cranberries

the rules of Thanks giving are

No store bought pies , no cranberries in a can , no stuffing from a box and absolutely no gravy from a jar. your in charge of bringing one thing , you get to choose and we aren't eating till afternoon. your worth learning how to do it right.

you have that backwards

Yams have a rough skin and are often white or off white
the Yam is a tuber while the sweet potato is a root , they actually come in all sorts of colors and shapes but have a smooth skin

the names get interchanged by stores so no doubt there is confusion but Yams are African continent tubers and Sweet potatoes are South and central american root in origin

Just checked it out. You are right, I guess I hate sweet potatoes.
I guess the grocery stores around here have had it backwards for years.

"This tastes like crap, and that's just how I like it".

lol. It could be a can of sardines and be ok.
It's family that matters, not my taste buds.

I like all the traditional Thanksgiving foods but I don't really care for marshmallows on my sweet taters.

Canned jelled cranberry. Not a fan.
Also I do not like that bean salad either.

My favorites are turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, big homemade rolls, apple pie.

One not mentioned yet that is a southern must have.

Pecan pie

No Thanksgiving is complete without pecan pie.

And I like mine made with dark Karo or cane syrup.
