Weren't you guys alive during the boom days of the 70s and early 80s? Inflation ran amok and it was one of the most profitable times to be a trapper.
Google "Historical inflation rate chart" and you'll see that in the two decades 70"s and 80's only three years had inflation as high as now, and for an extremely different reason.

I'm not a financial guy but inflation is inflation, no matter the reason. I remember in 80 and 81 the bottom fell out around here and my family went through some belt tightening. Yet, I was getting 20-25 bucks for coon in the round. Guns and butter.....

Its not about inflation, its were the end product is going to be used nowadays.
The Western nations have pretty much given up wearing much made with fur. Look what happen to coyote prices after Canada Goose (or whatever the expensive parka company was called up there) went woke. Way too many bunny huggers living in the West today, a generation or two of brain washing by the antis and few want to wear fur. The main buyers of North American fur are the Chinese, the Russians, and the Koreans, and 2 out 3 of those markets have issues as of now.
Then throw on top of everything economic slow down/ uneasiness and fewer people anywhere are going to pay good coin for mostly "luxury" products.
I see that the main fur clothing store in Sioux Falls (metro buying area of about 300,000 people) is doing a 'retirement" sale of their owners of almost 40 years. I wonder if that store will remain open after that couple retires? And we live in an area where no one is going to throw red paint on someone for wearing fur or at least get away with it.
Without the "Easterners", there isn't much of a fur market anymore. At least a vast majority of them don't believe there are a 100 genders...

One good thought is that China embraced the tenets of Capitalism in the 1970's and allowed trade with the west beginning then. At the same time Russia only traded with 14 other socialist countries and began accepting North American goods brought in through China, one of their governments approved trading partners. Lots of previously banned western products began to be traded freely ( I bet fur was one of these) but I have to do more research into that, and it's hard to find. That with the acceptance of the time of fur products in the west may have been the reason for that fur boom.

I would think now that NonPC is more accurate then blaming inflation cause times back then got a bit squirrely but yet the boom in fur. Hope some of the older old timers respond, it's interesting.

In 1978 I was in western Europe and every other woman on the street was wearing fur. Inflation was high and the dollar was at historic lows against all other currencies. That combination made for the fur boom. But the biggest component was there were customers wearing fur and it wasn't just trim. It was full coats and vests that used lots of pelts.
Not hard to figure why we were doing great when visiting the fur buyers.

What goes around comes around, or so they say. Bell bottom jeans are back in vogue so maybe fur will be also. I wear my coyote coat around town and people on the streets of middle America typically engage me in pleasant conversation about it. Donna wears her muskrat jacket with raccoon collar which she's had for years. BUT, how many of us wear fur around town? We want others to wear what we produce but we don't? That's like a beef farmer who doesn't eat meat or a chicken farmer who doesn't eat poultry. Wear what you produce! Blessings, Mark

Contact Colt Fur they buy carcass animals, had a bunch in their trailer last year and they expect prices to be similar to last year.
Sell your fur locally wy.wolfer, we have buyers paying decent money for our western furs, or send them right to FHA. I'm not sure you're up to speed about the state of the fur market this year. Are you sure about Colt Fur buying carcass goods this year?

Are you sure about Colt Fur buying carcass goods this year? I didn't ask specifically about carcass fur but when I talked with them they said prices are about the same as last year and they bought coyotes on the carcass last year. And yes I am well aware of what the fur market is this year are you? Looking to make a little off of bobcats this year, even at $250 they re worth putting up.

True story right there. Mr Peanut was president and the country was going to (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). But fur was red hot. $40.00 coon, $100.00 red fox, $75.00 grey fox, $8.00 muskrats, $11.00 skunks. We trappers were in high cotton. walleyed
