From what I’ve read he may not be able to answer but maybe he can.

Actually HT, it would be a black bowtie for a Yachting Commodore's Dress Event. :-)

If it's not a formal event, then it's generally casual wear. Black suit? . . . Navy Blue, regular black or gold tie would be fine. :-)

I googled images of it, and while many in black bowties not all are. One pic of a Commodore's Ball had people wearing ties of every color imaginable lol.

How many feet is considered a yacht? I ply the ocean with a modest 25 foot vessel.

If has no galley and head, I don't even consider it a boat.

As far as the OP's question goes, the color of the tie does not mater as much as the knot you use. Use a "flying bowline ". Then folks will instantly recognize you as someone who knows his yachts and is a proper salty dawg.

With no disrespect to anyone.I have always found them " Yachting " folks to be a breed of their own.Several of us motor boat folks had our season docks at a "Yacht" club marina for a couple years. One evening I was bringing my 27' Sea Ray Sport Cruiser into dock and it was maybe 25 mile an hour winds.I sure could have used a hand from someone on shore with the ropes,,but NOPE.Them Yacht folks just sat and watched.Luckily,,I can handle that,,and got into dock no problem,,but REALY?And on the opposite side,,I saw a sail boater coming in one evening in a similar situation.I went on his dock and offered him to throw me a rope,,he sais NO,,I got this,,as his boat bounced off two different docks and his wife stood on the bow of his boat about to bounce off.I find them folks just RUDE.
