A Georgia sheepdog is recovering from injuries after squaring off against a pack of coyotes, killing eight of them, while protecting his herd.

Casper, a sheepdog who works on John Wierwiller's Georgia farm, fought off the more than half a dozen coyotes in a fight that lasted over half an hour, WAGA-TV reported.

Wierwiller says that Casper disappeared for two days after the brutal fight.

"We knew he was hurt because we found parts of his tail and blood and other things, so we were worried," Wierwiller said.

Casper eventually returned to the farm with visible injuries.

Wierwiller said it "looked like a coyote grabbed his skin and peeled it right off."

Tuff dog right there. There should have been a pair of dogs guarding those sheep. Three dogs is the ultimate set up..one dog stays with the sheep..and the other 2 dogs go on a death march.

Hopefully that dog can have a full recovery

That's very good for a Maremma sheep dog. They are only about 100 pounds.

I have a Kangal and Kangal crosses. My Kangal is around 240. In their breeding tests, in Turkey and the Caucus, male Kangals are expected to kill 2 wolves by themselves or 6 wolves with another male Kangal. Kangals bite 300 PSI harder than an African lion. They have over 3 times the bite force of a pitbull.

The livestock guardian dogs are physically impressive, with an easy going temperament.

Why didn't the owner step in and help? I know if my dog had been in that situation, I would have grabbed a gun and helped even the odds instead of just standing hack and watching.

Watched the video and was wondering how they came up with him killing eight coyotes as they say they went down the road fighting and the dog was gone for 2 days? A nd they showed no dead coyotes. Just wondering.

The owner was likely nowhere near the fight. The dogs are bred to stay with the livestock they protect. It is believed that if humans suddenly went extinct, that the livestock guardian dogs would continue to protect sheep and goats for thousands of years afterwards.

Never had an issue with any of our gp dogs killing sheep or even our border collies. You'd think if they killed stock on a regular basis none of these big sheep guys out here would have any any they all have several with each flok of sheep.

Coyotes get blamed for a LOT of what the dogs are doing.

I saw one one day laying on a ewe, solid bright red fresh blood from his nose to his shoulders. Looked like a African wildlife documentary and a lion that just crawled out of a kill. Still could t convince the owner those things aren’t the end all.

Or my favorite “oh those dogs are always with the sheep”. Yeah, in the daylight. First night you pinch one two pastures over four miles from where they’re supposed to be!

I typically see more yote family groups of 3-4 here... wolves yes- seems high for coyotes.

My old HS teachers' sheepdogs were notorious for going on walkabouts at least once a month.

ere is a fun fact. Back in Turkey, they only feed the Anatolian Sheppard dogs while they are puppies, then turn them loose with the goat and sheep herds. They feed themselves by catching rabbits , gophers and such while staying with the herd.
Here, when the coyotes get close at night, Dexter, the Great Pyrenees springs into action and goes after them. Sometimes I see him in the morning covered in blood. So I check him over, but other than a hurt paw once, he never has any injuries. The coyotes don't seem to be able to get through his thick fur. I do find a dead coyote now and then though that he has had a tangle with. They never look to good and it would be a heck of a job to sew that patchwork of fur back up and he crunches right through their bones. We very rarely loose a chicken to predators even though ours and the neighbors forage during the day and only spend the night hours in the coop. The neighbor does not even have a coop and they roost in a tree next to his house. Between our two ( soon 3 ) dogs, those chickens can feel pretty safe.

Tell the owls grab the neighbors out of the trees. At least theas what happened to my pigeons I trained pups with that quit roosting I'm the coop. Well except the one th a t started roosting in the peak of the A Fram of the house. That one my wife shot to eliminate it pooping on the porch.

Two great Pyrenees have cut my daughter and son in laws bird loss to near 0. They find dead coons possums and coyotes pretty regular and several bobcats every year. They are dogs though. I suspect if they were not being fed they would eat chicken goose duck and peacock.

They had a litter of pups in the spring. They were all sold before they were weaned.

Have you ever seen a dog and multiple coyote fight? The only way that dog survived is he never quit moving always attacking. There is no safe shoot in a fight like that.

I know guy proud owner of 245 head sheep got back in sheep business 2 young GD dogs got a call had 5 dead sheep 9 other injured owner thought it was bear , coyote, ,, I went and looked it snow that nite after the attack... Nothing outside the pen , I told him either dog or young bear because it was fall but nothing was eaten. Turned out it was the 2young GD . There are death loss on critters period .
When owner say dog do not kill sheep I laugh ,,, eagle's do kill sheep either. Lol

If livestock guardian dogs commonly ate the sheep and goats they are used to protect, they very obviously would not have been used for a well documented, over 6000 year time period in most of Europe and parts of Asia and Africa.

I trap for a sheep outfit when he starts losing sheep, hasn't called in awhile took several dogs before he got some that would work. I have to stay aways back or the dogs find my coyotes and they end up deader than the fur buyer wants them!

Just as there no 100% coyote set there's not a 100% breed of dog for any purpose. I have seen plenty of papered coonhounds out of long lines of papered coonhounds that are just hounds, no coon to them. All dogs have holes but certain breeds have been carefully and selectively bred long enough to produce high percentage purpose built dogs.

Got a cousin that says the same of donkeys used for livestock protection. Got go through a few to find the ones that work.

I have seen video of a d I nkey killing a coyote and contuning to toss it around like a cat does a mouse after it was dead.

I hav watched video of live stock protection dogs shred coyotes.

But just as you said crossing 2 grand Champs of any dog does not mean the o ups will be as good or even worth feeding.
