I am going to be tanning muskrat. Clearly the skin is thin. I am thinking oak bark tanning liquor might make the leather tougher. I like to make working garments so I need leather with as much strength as possible. Any thoughts?

Muskrat skins can be surprisingly tough when tanned.
if you want stronger leather, tan with the saddles on with a commercial synthetic tan if you will use them for garments.

Hey Boco...have you used oxalic acid for tanning? I used alum last year. I liked the results but wanted to try something different (and cheaper). Also, I'm gonna have a ton of stuff to tan this year cause I am doing well with raccoons on cables. My goal is 30 raccoon plus about 20 squirrel and whatever muskrat I get. But oxalic acid...any experience?

Never tried Oxalic, heard it works.I guess as long as ph is correct for pickle and tan it likely doesnt matter too much what kind of acid you use.
When you mix aluminum sulfate with salt and water-you get a weak sulfuric acid.
