Donner,

My pic above reflects exactly what everybody is saying. There are 2x 2x12s for that window put together with a gap in the middle. They are supported by a 2x4 on each side, and the 2x4 studs that frame the 2x12s in have 12d nails through the framing 2x4 to attach the ends of the 2x12. There are no nails through the top plate into the 2x12.

It looks like an extremely easy fix, I would just do it myself. Cut the 2x4s that will support the header first, and use the actual 2x12 you have to make your measurements. I would put the support studs in first, you will nail those to the framing stud, this increases the sheer rating, and effectively uses the framing studs strength. The 2x12 header should sit flush on the support studs, and I personally would not nail or tack the 2x12 to the support stud. You nail the 2x12 to the framing stud on the ends. Goodluck.
